The National Orientation Agency, NOA, has taken the lead in building public trust and understanding around Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms, describing effective communication as key to the success of the policies.
At the inauguration of the Joint Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms for Public Awareness and Sensitisation, the Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said although the reforms are technically sound, their success will depend largely on how well Nigerians understand them. He warned that policies often fail when they are poorly communicated, stressing the need for clarity, transparency and responsiveness to public concerns.
Mallam Issa-Onilu explained that the reforms, scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026, are aimed at promoting fairness, inclusion, sustainability and improved service delivery across the country.
To ensure effective engagement with the public, a joint technical committee has been set up between the NOA and the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. The committee is tasked with coordinating a nationwide awareness and sensitisation campaign to address misconceptions, counter misinformation and reduce public anxiety.
The Director-General, who was represented at the event by the Director of Planning, Research and Strategy, Alhaji Nuru Kobi, formally inaugurated the committee.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Special Duties and Zonal Coordination, Mr. David Akoji, said the NOA’s presence in all 774 local government areas gives it a strong advantage in engaging communities, professional groups, civil society organisations, the informal sector and the media through a two-way communication approach.
