A podcast where I try to talk with at least one person from every nationality living in Tasmania and learn a bit about what brings them to Tasmania and what Tasmania brings to them.

First shoot at State Library and Archives of Tasmania, but it was quite a special one with a charismatic Cuban, Alfredo. You will see in some of these behind-the-scenes photography that Andrew Wilson Photography got a bit of a lesson in Cuban history and general knowledge.
The jacket Alfredo is wearing does not represent his support for any Cuban revolutionary ideals, far from it, rather it was a gift from his step-father, an important figure in his life, and wearing it was a mark of respect ( despite disagreements on some issues in the past).
It was also notable that Alfredo was the first Latino to come and have has portrait done - just lots of Latinas so far.
I also did an interview with Alfredo and the podcast episode will be coming out very soon, so watch out for that !

Here's a bit of a sample of some of the wonderful portraits captured by Andrew Wilson Photography for our 177 Nations of Tasmania Storytelling and Photography Exhibition at the State Library and Archives of Tasmania
Represented here are Spain, Uzbekistan, Lithuania, Mauritius, Singapore and Canada.

The exhibition is running until the end of the year and we'd love as many people as possible to come and check it out. At the time of posting, we have photographed and documented people from around 70 different nationalities living in Tasmania. At this stage, I have interviewed some 122 for the podcast, so if you're one of those who hasn't been photographed yet - get onto it, as we won't be doing the photography sessions until the end of the year, and we don't want anyone to miss out.
I am still looking for plenty more nationalities for the podcast ( and we will try and combined that with portrait sessions if we can ).
Here is a list of some of the nationalities I'm still looking for...

Our society is made up of people who have come here from places all across the globe and most of us trace our ancestry to another continent. It's not something to be afraid off, and being Australian isn't a set of rules and values set down in stone, we're a dynamic society where migrants, new and old, and those who were born here contribute to building and strengthening our nation and community.
I think also, if you listen to the personal stories on this podcast, it's pretty clear that no one comes to Australia with an unwillingness to adapt or change to fit in - one of the myths continues to be perpetuated.
I'm also of the belief that if you don't understand something it's better to be curious than be afraid and just because something looks different to you doesn't mean you don't have more in common than you imagine.

We've met all sorts of fantastic interesting people representing something like 70 different nations so far during the course of the photography project. Here's a little animated presented featuring some of the portraits Andrew Wilson Photography has taken so far.
Get on down to the State Library and Archives of Tasmania, Level 2, to check out more. A bunch of new photos and stories will be going up this week, as we extend the display into the History Room , so please come and have a look if you're in the city !
