Today, I took a sick day.
If you work in veterinary medicine, especially emergency and critical care, you know how much weight that sentence can carry.
I woke up at 1AM with a fever and sore throat. I didn’t want to risk getting my colleagues sick, and I didn’t want to show up unable to perform at the level our patients deserve. Hospital leadership was fully supportive, and I know I made the right call.
And still…I felt guilty.
Guilty for not being on shift.
Guilty for not being there for patients and their families.
Guilty for the load my colleagues carried instead.
No one made me feel bad. I would support any colleague who did the same. So why does that guilt show up so easily for so many of us?
Maybe it’s the culture of emergency and critical care. The responsibility. The constant urgency. The deep sense of ownership we feel over our patients.
But protecting your team and recognizing when you can’t be your best is also part of showing up for this profession.
Have you ever felt guilty for taking a sick day?
You’re not alone.
