Week 5 of our weekly online safety scenarios.
We use these weekly in our classrooms at school, and it’s really eye opening to challenge some of the ideas that the children have about being online.
I would love to hear if you have used these scenarios in your classrooms!

A Buddy System can really help out an overstretched teacher trying to juggle lots of things going on in an Computing lesson. These are the kids that are confident to work their way round and help do the easy problem solving, leaving you to tackle the more complex issues!
E.g. my laptop battery has died = computing Buddy job
I can’t find the file to save = computing Buddy job
My internet isn’t connecting = teacher job

Up first . What an absolute cracker to start off!
I shared this website in a staff meeting last year, and I’m still seeing teachers consistently using it every day.
It is so user friendly, and the basic version is free. Always helpful for tight school budgets!

Here is our next Top Tip.

How many times have you had a child save their work in completely the wrong place, where you then cannot even find it? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

I have started teaching this as a Computing lesson each year. Then all I have to do for each lesson is just tell them the folder name I want them to save their work in. I can then target the few children who may struggle.

It is a skill, like holding a pencil, that needs to be embedded. It will always help in the long run!

This stat scares me.
Who has ever scrolled on TikTok or Instagram or YouTube Shorts and seen something they wish they hadn’t?
As adults, we know to scroll by. We know to report.
Do the children in your class know this? Probably not. They shouldn’t even be on social media. There are age restrictions for a reason!
Online safety is so important. More so than it has ever been before.

Don’t wait for internet safety day.
Our next online safety scenario will be posted on Saturday. These can be used with your children each week to prompt discussions around their internet use.
Let’s build on the safety now, before it’s too late.

Our guides have been written for those who aren’t confident with computers. They are a detailed ‘how to’ for all things computing. We have ones to talk you through ‘GoogleSketchUp’ or ‘Scratch’ or ‘Sculptris’. Our newest software we have been writing guides for is ‘Tinkercad’. Great for model making we then process this into a file that can be 3D printed!
