041 Availability is the Best Skill

My youth football and soccer coach was the perfect example of what it means to be available and consistent. Despite having his own family, he always made time for me and my brothers. Week after week, for years, he’d pick us up for practices and games, then drive us back home. His wife would often help too, ensuring we had snacks and drinks, and sometimes giving us a ride. Because of their dedication, our lives took a very different path compared to others we grew up with.

He’s the inspiration behind my new goal: to simply be available. While many focus on teaching people to say "no," I’m choosing to focus on when and how to say "yes." I’m committed to stepping in where I’m needed, just like he did for us. His impact on our lives was profound, and I want to pay that forward.

I remember times when his van would break down, sometimes in the middle of the road. But despite the setbacks, that green van would always show up for the next practice or game. If it were me, a check engine light might be enough to make me give up, but I watched him persevere, and I know he changed the lives of generations of kids by doing so.

Availability is my greatest strength. I can learn any job as long as I show up every day. Any task can be completed if I’m willing to learn. And any goal can be achieved if I’m available to work toward it.

We HAVE to take a moment to celebrate the birthdate of MOM!! The wise sage that has raised generations and generations of kids including her own. She is the wisest warrior woman I know. I'm so proud of her and her ability to navigate this unforgiving world. She was my example before there was a Wakanda or even a Wonder Woman that I knew of. Her kindness is unmatched and her positivity has a flawless track record. I don't know if I've ever heard her say she hates anybody. Happy Birthday mom!!! Yes you can get these memes too😂😂😂😂 but we love you to life!!

023 Own Your Magic

Week 23 of 2024 Magic is our unique abilities to recreate ourselves from ANY circumstance. This happens with no regard to whether we believe in magic or not. There are these abilities within each of us, a birthright of sorts. Think it and so shall it be. Attract it and it shall find you. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Sometimes I do run blindly towards my purpose and in the trail left behind are both people and things that hinder my progress. Then there are times, I purposely sit still. Times where I wallow in the past seemingly stuck in what was, until that Magic in me starts stirring up again. I am propelled forward by dreams, responsibilities, and even the look in the eyes of the youth around me wishing for better opportunities. I can see Magic in their eyes. I pray that their imaginations remain with them forever. I hope that myself and the adults in my circle find and cling to theirs.

022 Our Best Ability is Our Availability

Week 22 of 2024 This week we discussed our best ability being our availability. I noticed two key opportunities to assist others and did not take action this week. I was available, but I kept moving forward. I decided that I would try harder to recognize moments that gave space for me to be available to not just myself, but to others. Being available is so valuable. Some of the best projects I have ever led or participated in have been a result of right place, right time. I was the only resource in the office over the Christmas holidays one year and an executive walked through looking for help on a high profile presentation. I ended up creating the first demo of a new tool for the automotive space. When we stay secluded and siloed, there is little room for collaboration. This ultimately stunts growth in our personal and professional life. For some, sitting in the same place for years is the desired outcome. For others like myself, we crave growth and new knowledge. We look forward to recognizing and being called on for new opportunities. I know that some are not easy and requires great sacrifice. I also know too well the joys of the feeling of completion and success. Never hesitate to ask me if I’m available. Even a no in this context does not mean never.

021 We Don’t Save Ourselves, We Save Each Other

Week 21 of 2024 Being underestimated in the workplace is common. I’ve had employees who were accepted as average role players on teams, but I would notice them being rockstars in life. They would run successful crowdfunding campaigns and complete awesome projects outside of work. They were purchasing homes at young ages and maintaining healthy relationships outside of work and on the job. They were always positive and hopeful no matter what was thrown their way. Yet when I presented them to leadership as who is next, they were overlooked. Underestimated when all they needed was an opportunity. That is what true DEI work is for me. I’m not concerned with race, gender or other preference. I’m most concerned with making sure that “everyone at least” gets an opportunity to excel beyond what is expected. I’ve personally watched teachers, supervisors, managers, and directors not take the time to get to know a person and dig deeper to recognize their greatness. Believe me we all have it, even if it’s dormant waiting on “your” opportunity. Find work ethic and integrity where ever it exists, meeting your people where they are. Increase people’s opportunity to show you their greatness and allow them the chance to pass or fail, go learn, try again and even then repeat the process. Look beyond your stat sheets, and yearly surveys. One of my employees biggest complaints was the over use of analytics in determining workplace needs. People felt they were just a number. The point being is that we don’t save ourselves, we save each other.

020 Seeing the Bigger Picture

Week 20 of 2024 Living a purpose driven life pushes me forward even during the toughest of times. I spent years in corporate America being taught “big picture” thinking. As a leader in my family and community, I am always considering big picture when making decisions. I’ve learned that my purpose is directly linked to the bigger picture. I love being a servant leader able to put other peoples needs and feelings before my own. I have also learned that I must establish some boundaries less I will be used because of who I am. There is an end goal that must be accomplished despite anything that I may experience personally. Each day, I wake up thankful for an opportunity to work towards the goal. I am human, so there are days and moments where it seems impossible and I’m stuck for a while. That day is not today. That time is not now. Here is to forward motion.

019 We Entertain Angels Unaware

Week 19 of 2024 found me looking at the son I’ve helped to raise since he was in elementary school. Unresponsive 10.5hrs away in a cold hospital room from a car accident at 27yrs old. Learning that it will be the last time I see him is a feeling I can’t describe. So I won’t attempt to. I have such grand memories to cling to. I hold so many laughs and “boy you wild” moments that paint a smile on my face when my emotions start to turn for the worst. The entire family is in my thoughts and prayers. All of his friends past and current are in my prayers. We are a village because of him. We are a more connected community because of him. Niree is forever part of each of our legacies and I am most grateful for it. Thank you God for allowing me the strength and wisdom to be a student in this angel’s life.

Week 18 0f 2024 There are times when there are no words to say. Only thoughts and feelings. Both things that are not meant to be verbalized in the moment. I’m learning to hold these moments as sacred. They are so valuable in the building of character and perseverance. One word that I have always hated was “shutup”. Lol! It immediately makes me want to say some things. It pulls out every rebellious ounce of DNA I have in my body. Now look at me. Shutting up. Holding my words and even feelings from public display. Enjoying the solitude I have found in this moment. This is mine to experience. Mine to treasure and appreciate for whatever it is worth. Taking the good and the bad of it and making mental space to hold it. I am building greatness in silence at the moment and there is nothing wrong with that.
