THE ECONOMICS OF FREE CONTENT

Can Nigerian Journalism Survive When Audiences Expect Everything for Free?

The digital age has democratized information, but for journalism in Nigeria, this hascome with a steep price tag. As audiences increasingly expect news and content to bereadily available without direct payment, the sustainability of news organizations, particularly in a developing economy like Nigeria, is under immense pressure. The fundamental question looms large: can journalism survive when the default expectationis “free”?

LOOMING FLOOD DANGER: LESSONS FROM ALAU DAM AND GUADALUPE RIVER
by Magnus Onyibe

Now, September’s rains are here again. Nigeria has issued flood alerts for 11 states between September 14 and 18, 2025, warning of torrential rains and rising rivers. High-risk areas stretch from Benue to Zamfara, including Makurdi, Rijau, Karaye, Jibia, Makira, and Gusau.

The National Flood Early Warning Centre has raised alarms over swelling levels in the Gongola, Benue, and Niger rivers. Residents on floodplains have been urged to evacuate—but many may have nowhere to go. Without safe shelters and clear evacuation plans, official warnings can only do so much.

LOSING THE CRAFT: THE SILENT CRISIS OF NIGERIAN STAGE ACTORS
By Makinde Adeniran

The lure of Nollywood’s glamour and speed is costing Nigerian stage actors the discipline and artistry that once set them apart.

Theatre has always been the crucible of Nigerian acting. It is where discipline is forged, where actors learn to command presence without retakes, and where storytelling is anchored in cultural richness. Yet in recent years, as more Nigerian stage actors cross into Nollywood, a troubling pattern has emerged: many of them are losing the very skills that once defined their artistry.

THE POLITICS OF STATE POLICE
by Magnus Onyibe
President Bola Tinubu has reignited a lightning rod of controversy by reopening the debate on state police—one of the most critical policy issues in Nigeria’s public discourse. Intriguingly, despite being on the front burner since the return of democracy in 1999, the idea of state police has never been adopted or implemented.

THE MONEY PHILOSOPHERS PART 3: A TOUR OF HISTORY’S GREATEST ECONOMIC MINDS
by Abdul Rotimi Mohammed

I have written about John Stuart Mill in another article but in that article I focused on his contributions to political philosophy and to politics. Here I will be concentrating on his contributions to economics. Mill was without a doubt, the preeminent economist of the mid-19th century. The natural successor to David Ricardo, who we came across in the previous article in this series. Mill was also seen to compare favorably with the great Adam Smith himself.

WHAT YOU ORDERED VERSUS WHAT YOU RECEIVED
By Dr Temitope Fasoranti

Almost everyone has a tale of placing an order for products based on a picture or a service promise and getting something sub-standard. While this is most prevalent in the e-commerce sector, we must begin to ask same of our service providers – is what I ordered different from what I got?

NIGERIA’S TRUST CRISIS: WHY PEOPLE ARE DITCHING NEWS MEDIA
by Ejiose Ikuenobe

In Nigeria, a profound crisis of trust is reshaping the media landscape. Once a cornerstone of public discourse, traditional news outlets are losing ground as Nigerians increasingly turnaway from mainstream media, driven by skepticism, misinformation, and a fracturedrelationship with institutions. This growing distrust, fueled by systemic corruption, government interference, and the rise of social media, has significant implications fordemocracy and social cohesion. Below, we explore the roots of this crisis, recent examples, and what it means for Nigeria’s future, written in a crisp, engaging news style.

NNPC’S MORIBUND REFINERIES AND THE CASE FOR PRIVATIZATION
by Magnus Onyibe

Reports in the public space indicate that in the past three years, about half a billion dollars have been sunk into rehabilitating the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, yet they remain idle. Even Aliko Dangote, whose private refinery is the continent’s largest, has dismissed them as “scrap.” Still, government funds continue to be poured into these obsolete plants—a practice likened to flogging a dead horse.

THE 7,000 NIGERIANS STRANDED IN LIBYA: NIDCOM, AND THE WORTH OF A NIGERIAN LIFE
by Magnus Onyibe

The recent revelation by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), that more than 7,000 Nigerians are currently stranded in Libya, inspired this intervention. Her statement revived painful memories that moved me, eight years ago in March 2017, to publish an article lamenting the surge of illegal migration by our young men and women in search of greener pastures abroad. That desperate pursuit often ended tragically, as countless Nigerians lost their lives attempting to cross the Sahara Desert on foot via Libya into Europe or navigating the Mediterranean Sea in rickety wooden boats into the Lampedusa islands, Italy.

DIGITAL STORAGE: A HISTORY
by Abdul Rotimi Mohammed

I have spent some time discussing computing megatrends. I had previously looked at the explosion in computer processing and bandwidth. Here, I will be looking at the corresponding explosive trends in digital storage. Together, these three megatrends are responsible for the current age of extremely networked, ubiquitous computing that we are experiencing. Specifically, the unit costs of digital storage have been drastically falling such that storage density is doubling every 13 months without a corresponding increase in price. This is known as Kryder’s law, named after Mark Kryder, who made the observation in the mid-2000s and was at the time, Chief Technology Officer of Seagate Corp., a hard disk manufacturer. This has made digital storage ridiculously cheap, leading to the explosion in data generation.
