For professionals navigating major transitions, especially those living abroad, this is an honest reflection on resilience, career reinvention, and the art of the pivot.

Paris doesn’t look like Emily in Paris. It doesn’t even look like the dream Robin Allison Davis imagined when she moved there in 2016.

What she found instead: breast cancer—twice. A community she didn’t expect. And a new definition of home.

Her essay on my Substack is a meditation on survival, belonging, and the messy truth of expat life.

What does it mean to belong to a place when your history has been fragmented? When you were adopted, disconnected from lineage, and yet your body still remembers?

In the latest "Conversations From Elsewhere", I’m honored to share a voice note from writer, traveler, and adoptee Lisette Austin, who reflects on her journey of DNA discovery, ancestral return, and finding home in Mexico and Brazil.

She asks:
🔹 What truths emerge when you stand on ancestral soil?
🔹 How does land become part of your healing?
🔹 What does home mean when you’ve had to find it piece by piece?
