“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

2025 cemented this quote as truth for me. The only thing I might add is, “…what lies within us, AND who lies with us.” And by that I mean the community we are connected to. Never has the power of community been so real to me. Never have I been so touched to witness, participate, and receive the gift of others walking alongside us.

May 2026 be the year we lean into community; what it means to meaningfully participate, serve, and receive from one another, collectively.

Thank you for being a part of this community. Liberty Road is here because of YOU, with YOU, and for YOU.

Happy New Year, friends!

One of my favorite holiday traditions is singing carols surrounded by candle light during Christmas Eve services. It’s the first pause of the hectic season—the first moment I am present enough to reflect on the holiday. Each year, I’m struck by a different song, a different lyric, and surprised by the welling up of emotion while trying to belt out a chorus. While I don’t usually anticipate which hymn will inspire the deepening, this note to you is giving me reason to consider the lyrics in advance.

After witnessing so many people I love walk through so much pain and heartbreak this year, “a weary world rejoices” from Oh Holy Night is likely to be the phrase that gets me. I am not sure how a weary world is suppose to rejoice with so much pain and uncertainty, but this year the words hit me as a charge—a call to action. “Rejoice, weary world!” It’s like the composer knew we needed to rejoice despite circumstances, rather than because of them.

I know each of you are carrying your own heavy load—it seems to come with the midlife territory. As we walk through what’s left of 2025 and into 2026, let’s collectively choose to rejoice. Let’s lead the world with the wisdom of our years and choose to rejoice as an act of both defiance and hope.

Wishing you and yours the Thrill of Hope this holiday season.

Merry Christmas!

Hello friends, a quick note of thanks.

I hope your table ends up looking like this. I hope it’s overflowing with those nearest and dearest to you. I hope it’s with messy with meaningful conversation and stained with beautiful memories. 1) In a culture obsessed with youth, Gretchen Terry-Leonard warmly invites us to reimagine our relationship with time itself. With an eye toward wit and wisdom, Your Second Prime challenges the negative cultural narratives about aging and shatters the myth that aging means decline, revealing instead how our Second Prime can become our most extraordinary chapter yet. Drawing from cutting-edge research, the book demonstrates how authentic relationships literally rewire our biology, creating resilience that extends our years and amplifies our joy.

2) In her award-winning new book, Normalize It, Dr. Jessica Zucker addresses a multitude of challenges women face that so often incite shame and overwhelming cultural pressure to stay silent. Based on patient stories, coupled with cutting-edge psychological research, Zucker fearlessly shares her insights into the shame and stigma that shroud so many women’s experiences and explores the liberation that can follow when we get vulnerable and talk about the hard stuff.

3) As she approached her fiftieth birthday, Dr. Debra Whitman, a globally recognized expert on aging, wanted to delve deeper into why so many Americans struggled to live well as they aged. And she began to wonder what was in store for her own second fifty. Suddenly, the questions she’d been studying for years became personal: How long will I live? Will I be healthy? Will I lose my memory? How long will I work? Will I have enough money? Where will I live? How will I die? Whether you are approaching fifty, into your later years, or caring for someone who is, you’ll find a wealth of wisdom in these pages.

Well, last week’s mini workshop was such a success, we thought we would do it again, but this time with Jessica Moriber!

On November 6 at 9:03 am PDT, join Jessica and me for a FREE, 30-minute mini-workshop about what’s next. DM me for the Zoom link to join.

Notes from Jessica
Life after 40 doesn’t come with a map.
What used to work no longer feels right.
What comes next isn’t always clear.

Before we meet on Thursday, take a few quiet minutes to reflect.
This exercise isn’t about fixing anything — it’s about noticing what’s ready to shift.
Come prepared with a few notes, or simply thoughts in mind:

•What’s one thing you keep saying you’ll do — but don’t?

•What’s one thing you keep doing — even though you know it drains you?

•What’s one belief or behavior you’re still carrying from an earlier version of yourself?

Bring your answers — and your curiosity — plus a pen and paper.
Together, we’ll explore

*Feel free to join even if you haven’t had the time to reflect on these questions. All are welcome.
