On This Day: October 24, 1946 – First Photo of Earth from Space

On October 24, 1946, humanity received its first true glimpse of Earth from the blackness of space. A 35mm motion picture camera, protected inside a V-2 missile, captured a series of still images as the rocket soared to an altitude of 65 miles (about 105 kilometers) after launching from White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, USA.

The missile was a captured German V-2 rocket repurposed by American scientists. While previous high-altitude flights had captured glimpses of the Earth's curvature, these were the first clear, detailed photographs showing our planet as a spherical body against the vastness of space.

These grainy black-and-white images were groundbreaking. They provided an unprecedented perspective, fueling dreams of space travel and inspiring generations to look beyond our atmosphere. This pioneering achievement laid critical groundwork for future space photography, satellite imaging, and eventually, the iconic "Blue Marble" images that would capture the public's imagination and deepen our understanding of our home planet.

One groundbreaking example is the "𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗲" (MMM), developed by the University of Michigan. It's truly a marvel of engineering, measuring just a couple of millimeters across – essentially a speck of dust! While Babbage is often credited with inventing the concept of the computer, it was Ada who wrote what is considered the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine – essentially, the world's first computer program!
