From the Roots Up Hi friend, I’m Kristy. We’re raising girls, growing food, and building our homestead—and our home—from the roots up.

Slow days, old skills, lots of love, and a deep faith holding it all together. We’re learning as we go—and inviting you along.

Most mornings lately, I walk outside and come back in with armfulls of fresh grown goodness. Today it was cucumbers, peppers, squash, zucchini, green beans, red Malabar spinach, basil, fennel, sage, lavender, and a handful of flowers that made their way into a little mason jar bouquet for the kitchen table.

It still amazes me how much can come from just a few steps outside the door. There’s a rhythm to it now: the crunch of grass underfoot, the rustle of leaves as I reach in to pick, the smell of basil clinging to my hands. These six Greenstalk planters have been producing so steadily that gathering has become part of my daily routine. And honestly, I’ve found myself looking forward to it, it feels grounding, like starting the day with abundance.

What I love most isn’t just the food, though I’ll never get tired of pulling supper straight off the vine. It’s the way it shifts the atmosphere in our home. Fresh squash on the counter says, “Let’s cook together tonight.” A bouquet of zinnias and celosia on the table whispers, “Slow down. Enjoy this moment.” Even the simple act of rinsing cucumbers at the sink reminds me that we are nourished by work we put our hands to.

I think that’s why gardening, whether big or small, feels so different than just going to the store. It’s not only about what ends up on the plate. It’s about noticing the little blessings on the way there: blossoms turning to beans, seeds stretching into squash, tiny buds opening into color.

No, my garden isn’t perfect. Some plants are overgrown, some flowers are leaning a little wild, and sometimes I don’t get to everything I meant to. But the daily harvest keeps showing up, and it reminds me that perfection isn’t the goal, faithfulness is. Tending, gathering, and giving thanks for what grows.

So today I’m sitting here with a counter full of vegetables and herbs, a vase of bright flowers, and a grateful heart. And I can’t help but wonder, what’s been filling your basket this week? 🌿💐

✨ We woke up this weekend to see that our YouTube channel has officially passed 90,000 subscribers! ✨

When we started From the Roots Up three years ago, we never imagined this little corner of the internet would grow into such a big family. Every view, every comment, every share, YOU are the reason we’ve made it this far.

We’re now on the final stretch to 100,000 (and that shiny silver play button 🤍). It feels surreal, but so exciting to know it’s right around the corner!

Thank you for being here and growing with us. Truly, from the roots up. 🌱

What kind of video would you love to see us make to celebrate when we hit 100K? 🎉

✨ Fresh Milled M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies ✨

I just pulled these beauties out of the oven for the county fair dessert contest, and y’all… 🤤 They turned out SO delicious! Soft, chewy, melty chocolate chips with a little crunch of M&Ms in every bite.

It’s always extra fun to see what freshly milled flour can do, and these cookies did not disappoint! 🙌

I’ll be dropping the recipe soon so you can try them at home, trust me, your family is going to love them. 💛

👉 What’s your go-to fair treat? Funnel cakes? Fried pickles? Or are you a cookie lover like me? 🍪

This week for the Every Bit Counts Challenge I took on 7 different ferments, from sauerkraut to garlic, carrots, dilly beans, and even a jar of fruit scrap vinegar.

If you’ve been wanting to try fermenting but it feels intimidating, this one’s for you. I’ll show you just how simple it can be to get those jars bubbling on your own counter.

Which one would YOU try first? 👇

🥬 One of the things we worked on this week was a fresh batch of sauerkraut. It never stops amazing me that something as simple as cabbage and salt can transform into something so flavorful and nourishing.

Ferments have been around for thousands of years for a reason, they’re one of the easiest, oldest ways to preserve food. No canner, no freezer space, just a jar on the counter and a little patience. And the bonus? They’re full of probiotics that support gut health, they keep for months in the fridge, and they add the best tangy crunch to meals.

I love knowing that we’re not just saving food, but actually making it better in the process. That’s the kind of old-fashioned skill I want to keep alive in our home.

🎥 Tomorrow I’ll be sharing the full ferment video, so if you’ve ever wondered how to get started, you’ll see just how simple it can be!

Week 5 in the container garden and the heat is ridiculous…but the plants don’t seem to care. 😅

I’ve got purple hulled peas and green beans almost ready to pick, peppers and squash rolling in every day, herbs right outside my door, Malabar spinach ready, baby cucumbers showing up, little tomatoes everywhere, and ground cherries we snack on daily.

Most of it’s packed into the Greenstalks, but the EZ Cube is holding its own with tomatoes, herbs, and flowers. Honestly…this little setup is giving us SO much food and it makes me ridiculously happy. 🥒🍅🌶

Week one of the Every Bit Counts Challenge is wrapped up, and my kitchen has been loud all week — the clink of jars, the hiss of the canner, the soft “ping” that lets me know another seal has set.

We’ve put up tomatoes, perpetual pickles, peaches, strawberry lemonade concentrate, apple pie filling, pickled peppers, and orange marmalade. Seven days. Seven little projects. Nothing fancy. Just steady, one-after-another work that adds up when you aren’t looking.

Jessica at Three Rivers Homestead started this challenge to help us fill our shelves without wearing ourselves out — and she’s right, it works. My pantry’s a little fuller, my feet are a little tired, and my heart is a whole lot grateful.

What about you? What’s made it into jars at your house this week?

It may be hotter than a cast-iron skillet in July… but believe it or not, now is the time to start planning your fall garden. 🥬🍂

If you’ve ever blinked and realized you missed your window to plant broccoli or carrots, you know how frustrating it can be. That’s why I’ve been using the SeedTime Garden Planning app, it shows me exactly when to start each crop for my zone so I don’t have to guess (or keep 27 sticky notes on my fridge 😅).

Fall is an excellent tome to plant, fewer bugs, cooler weather, and the best greens of the year. If you’re ready to get your fall plan in place, I shared how I use SeedTime here:

For the first time ever, I’m growing squash and zucchini without waging war against squash bugs. 🙌

These little mini varieties are thriving in my GreenStalk Garden planter, and I’m convinced the vertical growing is the secret. The plants get great airflow, I can see every leaf, and there’s nowhere for the bugs to hide.

It’s been such a relief to walk out each morning and see blossoms and baby squash instead of damage and eggs. And honestly… they’re beautiful growing this way. 💛

If you’ve ever sworn off squash because of those awful bugs, vertical gardening might just change your mind. 🌱

What’s your favorite trick for keeping pests out of the garden?
