Homemaking isn’t old-fashioned.
It’s legacy.

When we teach our daughters to knead dough, to plan meals, to open the door with joy and welcome people in—we’re handing down more than a skill set. We’re passing on a tradition of love, service, and quiet strength.

These aren’t just chores.
They’re habits of the heart.

In a world that moves fast and tells girls to chase applause, there’s something deeply powerful about slowing down to build a life that feels like home. One filled with cinnamon rolls, kitchen counters dusted in flour, laughter from the living room, and people who feel safe under your roof.

It’s not about making everything perfect.
It’s about showing up with what you have, and creating beauty out of the ordinary.

Because teaching our daughters to create a home is one of the most lasting gifts we can give.

💛 What’s one homemaking skill you learned from someone you love—or hope to pass on to the next generation?
I’d love to hear your answers below.

There’s something deeply grounding about growing your own fruit.

These pears started as tiny blossoms in spring — and here they are, soaking up summer sun, getting plumper by the day. 🍐

If you’re dreaming of an orchard, pears are a beautiful place to start. They’re one of the easiest fruits to grow organically:
✔️ Cold hardy
✔️ Low pest pressure
✔️ Disease resistant (especially Asian and fire blight–resistant European varieties)
✔️ Long-lived and productive

You’ll need two compatible varieties for pollination, a sunny spot, and a bit of patience — but watching your own trees bear fruit is a slow, steady kind of joy that’s hard to describe.

Homesteading isn’t about instant results. It’s about planting today for a harvest you may not taste until tomorrow.

Not every flower is planted with intention…
Some just show up — bold, bright, and perfectly suited for the space they’ve claimed.

This little wildflower wasn’t part of any garden plan. It grew where it wanted, bent its petals toward the sun, and made its mark anyway. And maybe that’s the most beautiful kind of growth — the kind that doesn’t wait for permission.

Fun fact: Wildflowers like this black-eyed Susan are more than just pretty — they support pollinators, enrich the soil, and often thrive with zero help from us. They’re nature’s way of reminding us that beauty and purpose can grow anywhere.

🌿 What’s your favorite wild bloom to spot on your land?

Why We Keep a Grumpy Rooster 🐓

Meet Mr. Darcy. He’s bold. He’s proud. And yes...he’s very grumpy. We’ve been chased, side-eyed, and even fended him off with a stick or two (don’t worry—he lives to sass another day). But despite his surly attitude, we wouldn’t dream of getting rid of him.

Why?

Because he’s a hero in feathers.

Mr. Darcy takes the high ground—literally—every single day. Whether it’s a fence post or the top of the coop, he keeps constant watch over his hens. We’ve seen him take on a hawk mid-air. We’ve found evidence of nighttime brawls with predators where he clearly stood his ground. And through it all, he’s kept our free-ranging flock safe and thriving.

Here’s why roosters, even the ornery ones, are worth their weight in gold:

💪 They protect the flock from predators
👀 They’re natural lookouts, always alert
🍽️ They find and call the hens to food like little gentleman scouts
🐣 They help maintain a natural flock dynamic and fertilize eggs if you want to hatch your own
🧭 They even guide the flock back to safety when danger’s near

Sure, they can be a handful. But a good rooster is like a guard dog with feathers—and sometimes a little attitude is exactly what keeps everyone else safe.

To the roosters—feisty, loyal, and fiercely protective—thanks for watching the skies so we don’t have to. 💙

🌿 NEW BLOG: Refreshing Your Container Garden Soil! 🌿

I used to wonder why my container plants weren’t growing like they should… turns out the secret was in the soil. 👀

This week I gave my GreenStalks a full refresh—new nutrients, better texture, and a whole lot of love—and I walked through the whole process on the blog. If your pots or planters are looking tired, this might be just the boost they need!

🌾 Just a Little End-of-Day Thought 🐰

This right here... this is what it’s all about.

Not the clean house (ours sure isn’t), not the long list of chores we almost finished. It’s these slow, sweet moments—the kind you don’t plan, but sure are thankful for. A girl and her bunny, soaking up the last light of the day.

Homesteading isn’t always pretty. It’s dirt under your nails, dishes in the sink, and more projects than daylight. But it’s also raising kids who know how to work hard, love big, and pause to snuggle something soft.

We’re not after perfect. We’re after real. And days like this feel just right.

You know the Saturday has been well spent when you have to hose off before going inside 😂🥰🤪

🪴 Is your container garden soil tired out? Before you plant again, here’s how I refresh my Greenstalk soil to give it a big nutrient boost — and it works for any container garden!

We’re talking compost, minerals, and one big secret: your planter is a closed ecosystem that needs regular fertilizing. I’ll walk you through exactly what I add and why, so your plants get the best start possible this season. 🌱

💬 Have you ever refreshed your container soil before replanting? Let me know what’s worked for you!

It’s spring! That means it’s time to crank up the incubator and we are SO excited to fill it with these beauties. This year we are trying a few new breeds from Paragon Homestead Hatchery: Ermine Ameracaunas, Lavender Ameracaunas, Crested Cream Legbars, and Salmon Favorelles. We also threw in some of our American Bresse, Black Copper Marans, and Olive Egger eggs. In 21 days we should have a beautiful batch of fluff babies! What are you hatching this year? I’d love to see pictures of your eggs or new chicks!
