Emerge to the surface

The nation’s predicament has ignited the flame within our people, sending hearts to mission as people vow to gather in protest to denounce the corruption that has been hindering the country’s progress and ambitions. The people are waiting, for the time has come to break the silence and exercise our civil rights to kickstart action that has been long overdue.

As most may know, these few months have been marked with corruption as the government unveils the true nature behind flood-control projects. With the ones behind the scheme, being government officials alike, hiding behind closed doors as the people are left knocking at their doorsteps, seeking accountability and justice. Leaving people scuffling yet again with the sight of flooded homes and empty promises, but let this not be the final curtain call for the nation.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the Philippines lies along the typhoon belt, establishing the severity and frequency of weather disturbances within our country, endangering the lives of countless people and sweeping away years of construction and planning on shelter and infrastructure. More so, showing the gravity of the situation and the cost of lousy work on flood-control projects, an initiative which was conceived in the first place, to protect our people from the floods and calamities.

And despite all this, there is no change seen whatsoever as the people are left to suffer for their ignorance. Not to mention that these projects were funded by the people’s tax money, honest tax-payers who were taught to fight for their cause righteously and with respect to the rights of others. But what difference does this make if the ones that are tasked to govern the money of the people and make the laws that shape our system, just take the money allocated for projects in one swoop.

We don’t need more stories that praise the people’s resiliency in the face of calamities, we need a system that protects them from it, a one that will make their chests loosen and spare them the need to struggle and persist in these circumstances. Just because the people are resilient, doesn’t mean that it needs to stay like this forever. The rain does not fall on one roof alone.

Filipinos have long been silenced but now that this situation has come to light, they are making their thoughts known and standing up against the very ones that failed to choose their country over themselves. They can no longer filter out our voices as our grief and disappointment echoes in every corner, manifesting through acts of advocacy and rebellion. It’s not fair that in our own waters, people are dragged down as government push themselves up to the surface, gasping for air in search for a lavish living.

It's only right that the people get a say in where our taxes truly go. The people are taxed in everything they buy and pay for, and keeping it to achieve generational wealth is far from moral. The people have remained patient and resilient but this show has gone for too long. People are left guessing with their charades but we deserve nothing but the truth they hide from us as they stay afloat.

The government has already made calculated moves to extinguish the flames in our hearts. One of the many examples of this being the persuasion of House speaker Martin Romualdez to resign, smoothly inserting Faustino Dy in the picture, to calm the storm. But if we fall victim to those pacifying actions, the cause the people fight for will stumble back into the dark and away from the reach of the people. And most importantly, this vicious cycle will never end, sealing our fate as this nation sinks to the bottom of the sea.

Don't let the government drink the lifeblood of the people for we will keep getting deprived until there is nothing left for the next generation. The money belongs to the citizens of this country, the ones who wish for a better future, the ones who work to provide for their families, the ones who go out of their way to live righteously, and the ones who give their trust to the hands of our government. Open their eyes to reality and give light to the future they stole from us and finally pave the way for reckoning and change. As September 21 nears, the people are waking up to the break of dawn for our country.
