18-year-old Teara Ann Bryant’s mother dropped her off at Leland Memorial Hospital for a doctor’s appointment on November 16, 1972. Afterward, she called her family to check in on her 1-year-old and decided to walk the short distance home. Teara was never heard from again.

14-year-old Angela Denise Barnes was walking home from a friend's house around midnight on July 13, 1971. Her body was found alongside Route 228 in Maryland 6 hours later. In 1974, two former Metropolitan D.C. police officers, Edward Sellman, and Tommie Simmons were arrested for her murder. Sellman's ex-wife reported that they intended to sexually assault her. When she fought them off, she was "accidentally" shot.

After a hiatus of 10 months, police find the body of 17-year-old Diane Williams on September 6th, 1972. Diane would be the final confirmed victim of the Freeway Phantom.

In the early morning hours of November 16th, 1971, police discovered the body of 18-year-old Brenda Woodard. But this time, it's clear that the victim fought back against the killer. And in Brenda's coat pocket, police discover a handwritten note from the Phantom.

On October 1, 1971, Nene’s family sent her to a grocery store less than one block from the Yates home. She never returned. Less than three hours later, her body was found just off the shoulder of Pennsylvania Avenue in Prince George’s County, Maryland by a Hitchhiker. Finally, news outlets began to pick up the story of these murdered black girls. And the media gave the killer a name, "Freeway Phantom."
