The 19th Amendment was passed by both houses of Congress in 1919, which began the state ratification process and signified a monumental achievement in the 70-year fight for women's right to vote.

On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th and final state necessary to ratify the 19th Amendment. Eight days later, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the ratification, and the 19th Amendment officially became part of the Constitution.

But despite this historic achievement, it's important to note that the 19th Amendment did not grant universal suffrage for women: not all Native American and Asian women were able to vote under the amendment due to citizenship laws, and Black women in many states remained disenfranchised because of Jim Crow-era restrictions. Suffrage for all women would not be fully achieved until 1965, when the Voting Rights Act passed and removed discriminatory barriers that kept many people of color from voting, though some forms of disenfranchisement still exist in our electoral system today.
