It's a series of bday posts for the MAMMF team! This one is for who I'm so happy I got to celebrate in person yesterday!
Liz and I became fast friends in grad school at UNC and defended our master's theses in journalism on the same day, which I CANNOT believe is coming up on EIGHT years ago. We had totally different tracks, with my focus being Science & Medical Journalism and Liz gaining a really strong reporting background in Radio.
Her main focus since has been as Education Reporter at WUNC, but she has provided so much support to MAMMF as Lead Producer: from running the soundboard in studio to pre-interviewing, reviewing scripts, and cutting audio.
Personally, I have to credit much of my growth in any radio work to Liz. I can remember the early days of scripting where it would take me so many takes to just sound like I wasn't reading. What I can do in 2-3 takes years later is because Liz would sit beside me, over and over, to really learn VOICING a script. And how to best write for radio.
I'm thankful to have been able to work closely with a friend over all these years who shares so many similar interests (we were both Anthropology majors in college) and who truly cares about social issues and the ways they should be covered. I have deep admiration for her as a journalist, and I've learned so much from her professionally over the years.
On the personal front, we have been through too much of the highs and lows of life together for me to list :)
Please join me in wishing a happy belated bday to Liz!
