The founder of Osmo and its perfume creator tool Generation, Alex Wiltschko is reshaping one of the world’s most secretive arts, using what he calls Olfactory Intelligence (OI) to democratise scent.

Each client receives three OI-generated samples before Generation’s master perfumer, Christophe Laudamiel, steps in to refine them for the market.

“We have to smell it, and everything that goes out of the door, there are human perfumers involved,” Wiltschko says. “The AI doesn’t make the process happen, it just speeds it up.”

During a half-hour interview with The National, Generation produces two distinct but complementary perfumes from the same brief. “For a master perfumer, that’s a year and a half of work,” he notes.

Meet our September cover star: Hend Sabry.

One of the region’s most powerful voices, the Tunisian-Egyptian actress speaks with rare conviction about loss, meaning, and the weight her words carry - whether on screen, on stage, or in the public sphere.

Shot in the heart of old Cairo by rising Egyptian photographer Hussein Mardini, this cover story is as much about strength as it is about renewal.

Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who died aged 91, was regarded as a ground-breaking figure in the fashion industry, with an uncanny business sense and an ability to spot opportunities long before others.

In 2010, he opened his first hotel in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and brought his runway show to the emirate in October 2021, the same month he received a UAE golden visa.

Among other things, Armani is credited with inventing red carpet dressing. “Being able to do this job is a unique, fulfilling privilege that always pushes me to give my best. I love my work, and I am passionate about it, as I know that the lives of others are profoundly impacted by clothes and furnishings,” he told The National in an interview.

Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week will launch this December, and judging by the rarity of pieces on offer, it promises to be a first-of-its-kind event. A collaboration between Sotheby’s and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, the initiative is aimed at the region’s most discerning collectors and an international clientele.

Sotheby’s has offered a preview for what will be on sale, such as a 2017 Pagani Zonda 760 Riviera, expected to fetch $9.5-$10.5 million and the largest fancy vivid orangy pink diamond ever graded, The Desert Rose, among other extravagant items.

While this marks the first Sotheby’s sale in the capital, what sets it apart from other luxury goods sales is "the curation", says Josh Pullan, global head of Sotheby’s luxury division.

“These are pieces you can’t just walk into a boutique and buy; they’re unique or ultra rare, often one-of-a-kind, often with extraordinary provenance. That level of exclusivity is what sets the sale apart. Our ambition is not to stage a 300-lot auction, but to curate only the very best".

Fake weddings – Gen Z’s latest obsession – have become all the rage, where people buy tickets to attend a party themed as a wedding organised at hotels, clubs and resorts purely for fun.

Earlier this month, Chrysle Pinto arrived at a wedding party in Dubai that felt like a scene from a Bollywood blockbuster. The venue sparkled with dazzling lights and guests wore ornate outfits adorned with intricate embroidery.

The attendees are mostly Gen Z, who experience a night of drama and delight of an Indian wedding sans a bride, a groom, wedding rituals and tearful farewells.

“Fake wedding parties are the chaotic joy we didn’t know we needed. We love moments that make a statement. Gen Z is all about vibes, virality and doing things differently, and these weddings are theatrical in the best way,” she said.

From walrus ivory worn by Inuit hunters to the Hollywood-favoured Wayfarer, sunglasses have travelled a 2,000-year journey blending function and fashion.

Once used to shield Arctic eyes from snow glare or conceal the expressions of Imperial Chinese judges, they evolved into aviation gear, a driver’s accessory, and a style statement made famous by stars from Bob Dylan to Shah Rukh Khan.

Today’s frames merge science and design, blocking harmful UV rays while keeping the cool factor firmly intact.

Palestinian-American model Bella Hadid marks the launch of her latest fragrance, Eternal Roots, by wearing the Maqlouba dress from Palestinian designer Reema Al Banna of Dubai-based label Reemami.

The floor-length, halter-neck piece is adorned with hand-drawn sketches – from tatreez embroidery motifs to a tin of olive oil – reflecting scenes of everyday Palestinian heritage.

Eternal Roots is the fifth release from Hadid’s fragrance brand Orebella, which she says ‘represents more than trees’, symbolising anchors that ‘hold us steady through storms’.

Since the start of the Israel-Gaza war, Hadid has used fashion as a form of activism, often wearing designs that nod to her heritage.

The all-new Lamborghini model was a thriving centrepiece at Portugal’s Estoril Circuit launch event.

A line-up of Temerarios sat in the pit lane with eye-catching bright colours, their low-slung, angular forms were new but unmistakably Lamborghini.

“Lamborghini is about more than speed – it’s about presence and a primal connection to the machine. Even before its official reveal, the Temerario whispered promises of a new chapter in Sant’Agata Bolognese’s pursuit of automotive drama,” writes Simon Wilgress-Pipe.
