The news about Ricky Hatton is so indescribably sad. He meant so much to British boxing. One of the first fighters I ever loved as a teenager.

A genuine working class hero who crossed over from a council estate to mainstream stardom.

All my thoughts are with his family.

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?

22 months ago, Port Talbot’s pinpoint Conor McIntosh scored four knockdowns over Newport’s Nathan Howells to capture Welsh super-featherweight honours.

Howells has rebuilt and returns to their final eliminator for the British title as Celtic champion. They return to the Vale Sports Arena and it’s live on S4C.

The show features quality prospects like Kyran Jones, Garan Croft, and others. The broadcast starts with the undercard from 5:45pm.

Founder of Cwmavon Hornets in 1995, hundreds of amateurs benefitted from Nigel’s dedication to boxing.

It took him all the way to the top, coaching Olympians and top internationals at Team GB and Holland.

He will be sorely missed by his community and country.

Welsh boxing has lost some hugely impactful coaches in recent years.

Enzo Calzaghe, Ronnie Rush, John Radmore, Ronnie Morris, Ivor ‘Pete’ Bartlett, and now Nigel Davies.

A generation of good boxing men who helped so many others achieve their dreams.

𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖: It’s been nearly six years since Treharris’ Gavin Gwynne (18-4-1, 5KO) fought on a small hall show in South Wales and he’s hoping a quick return to the old territory can help springboard him back to the top table.

“When I’m waking up at 5am, I wouldn’t be doing that if I didn’t want it,” said Gwynne, who has returned to work as he waits for a rematch of his controversial loss to Cameron Vuong.

𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓: Swansea’s W***y Gilheaney (6-0, 2KO) persisted through a brutal bloodbath to break down Cardiff’s Carvell Crocker (8-1) in six savage rounds and claim back-to-back Welsh titles on a dramatic night in Neath.

“I threw a vintage Enzo Maccarinelli uppercut. That was the turning point for the fight. Remember Enzo knocking out [Marcelo Fabian] Dominguez to win the world title? I knew he was proud of that one,” reflected Gilheaney, who climbed to his coach’s shoulders in the post-fight celebrations, and his comparison was right.

“I’m going to have a few words with certain people, friends of mine who you probably know, in the morning,” hinted Maccarinelli afterwards as the two plan to graduate to bigger stages.

W***y Gilheaney (6-0, 2KO) stops Carvell Crocker (8-1) in round six to become a two-weight Welsh champion.

At first, Crocker frustrated Gilheaney, who had to navigate a bad cut to his nose.

An uppercut in the fifth turned the tide and Gilheaney didn’t let Crocker off the hook.

Gavin Gwynne (18-4-1, 5KO) ended nine months of inactivity with a points win over the durable Owen Durnan (4-31-1), 60-53.

It was six scrappy rounds but Gwynne is back in the ring and winning. At 35, that’s probably the main thing for the former champion.

Hopefully the overdue rematch with Cameron Vuong can finally happen.

Dylan Hayward (1-0), son of Welsh international rugby player and coach Byron, just made his professional debut in Neath.

Solid stuff from the national amateur champion, who beat journeyman Kristaps Zulgis (10-61-3, 5KO) on points, 40-36.

The middleweight is up and running.
