✍️ 𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓: Cardiff’s Joe Cordina (18-1, 9 KOs) kickstarted his new chapter with a well-earned decision victory over Mexico’s Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz (17-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday.

“They go on about Mexicans coming over and shocking everyone. They’re tough, they’re this, they’re that. I’m Welsh and I’m Maltese. That’s a dangerous mix,” he said with a smile at the AO Arena in Manchester.

Cordina’s triumph saw him collect the WBO Global title, which should grant him a top-15 ranking. The new campaign to create history and become a two-weight world champion is underway.

A solid performance from Joe Cordina last night in Manchester. Always a step ahead, he earned 100-90, 99-91, and 98-92 scorecards against a typically tough Mexican in Jaret Gonzalez.

After 14 months out of the ring, a clear but competitive win was a good way to get back in the swing of things. 10 rounds of action under his belt and some time together with new coach Gary Lockett - both boxes worth ticking.

Would Cordina benefit from another fight before world honours? Probably yes. His timing and experience is a challenge for anyone at lightweight, especially now he’s active again and equipped with a plan from promoter Eddie Hearn.

There was a double headed in Lanarkshire, Scotland on Friday, but both contests ended in defeat for Welsh boxers.

Risca’s Jake Tinklin (12-5) was stopped for the first time in his Celtic welterweight title fight. Despite a brave effort to repel Scotland’s skilful Tyler Jolly (6-0, 4KO), Tinklin was retired by his corner in the ninth round after suffering an injured eye.

Earlier in the evening, Swansea’s super-bantamweight Ashleigh Johnson (3-3) pushed the unbeaten Cassidy Todd (5-0) all the way in a tight 10 rounder. They were separated by a 94-96 scorecard went against the Welshwoman, who once again provided plenty of action.

Cardiff’s game Rashid Omar (8-3, 1KO) was on the wrong end of a competitive defeat in Bristol.

The sharper skills of local super-lightweight Anton Haskins (13-0, 2KO) helped him to secure a 78-74 decision over eight rounds.

Omar, who never ducks a challenge, deserves a lot of credit for facing the fifth undefeated opponent of his 11-fight career.

The Ioan Croft (4-0, 3KO) train is full steam ahead after another dominating performance.

Mexico’s Fernando Valencia (9-69, 5KO) was stopped in the third round after a ruthless barrage of southpaw lefts left him defenceless.

Croft, who enjoyed a distinguished amateur career, has made a smooth transition to the professional code and could be the best unsigned talent in the UK.
