On April 16th, Stony Brook students and faculty gathered around the admin fountain for a rally. This rally was a call to action. A vocal and physical opposition to the Stony Brook Administration’s confirmation that 11 SBU students had their visa’s terminated by the federal government. As a result, they gathered to remind the university that it needs to take further action to protect those at risk from the federal government’s crackdown on non-citizens. Especially those who come here, to our school, to get an education. It’s a reminder that we must look out for each other and speak up for those who feel that they are voiceless. They are not.

Belleza Universal was a pageant held on Thursday from 6 to 11 p.m. by the Latin American Student Organization(LASO). Ten contestants participated in the pageant, representing multiple countries, such as Colombia, Nigeria, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Italy, Boricua, Haiti, India, Mexico, and Bangladesh. All contestants participated and competed in multiple sections, such as streetwear modeling, cultural clothing/performances, swimwear, talents, and, lastly, the formal wear and questions segment. At the end of the pageant, Ms.Colombia was crowned the winner, and the runner-ups were Ms.Puerto Rico and Ms.Haiti.

You probably all saw the email that went out on Thursday, the one where the administration confirmed that 11 Stony Brook students have had their visas terminated by the federal government.

Eleven of our classmates, friends, and colleagues are suddenly at risk of being forced out of the country. These are people who study with us, teach alongside us and contribute to our community. And right now, they’re being targeted.

The university says it’s offering individualized support and is “monitoring the situation.” That’s a start, but it’s not enough. We need a public commitment from the Stony Brook administration to stand up for international and undocumented students, graduate workers, and staff — especially when their future here is on the line.

We’re calling on everyone to take action:
1. Sign the petition demanding that SBU reaffirm its commitment and protect those at risk.
2. Show up to the rally this Wednesday, 4/16 at 12:30 PM at the Admin Fountain.

This isn’t just about 11 students. This is about the kind of community we want to be. A community that protects its people or one that stays silent when they need us most.
