Seattle spends more than $1.2 billion each year on public education, nearly the same as running the entire city. So why do so few people know where that money goes, or who’s actually in charge of it? In this episode of Right in Front of My Face, I sit down with Vivian Song, candidate for Seattle School Board District 5, to talk about how local politics directly shape our schools, and why most of us aren’t paying enough attention. I had no idea what to expect when I sat down with this morning. Even though I’ve interviewed quite a few candidates, I still get jittery when a public servant is willing to talk. The School Board is a HOT topic and I genuinely had so many questions about how it all works. The theme of this season is strong women in middle age and Vivian is both. Our conversation will air next week, but I am offering it up because the Seattle election in November is very important and getting to know these candidates on a human level to me is beyond helpful. Stay tuned.
