ABOUT FABIOLA:
Fabiola Andrade is a q***r, Honduran-born, US–based filmmaker inspired by her multicultural heritage and interdisciplinary background. Through drama, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, the themes in her projects explore the coming of self and how it flows into day-to-day yet surreal settings. She is a Film Independent Producer fellow, Telluride Film Festival Cinephile mentee, Tomorrow Filmmakers Today’s Producer fellow, and a New Orleans Film Society’s Emerging Voices’ Director Lab alumna. She has collaborated in various production roles with Netflix, Disney, Universal, and Paramount Pictures. Andrade believes in the infinite power of storytelling and is committed to discovering its reach throughout her lifetime, project by project.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
The goal is to give up-and-coming indie directors and curious parties a look into the career of an independent director. The workshop will consist of case studies of independent filmmakers whose works span fiction and nonfiction. It will also provide resources for grants, labs, cohorts, festivals, etc that are supportive of independent filmmakers.

ABOUT NAILAH:
Nailah Jefferson is a New Orleans born filmmaker intrigued and inspired by the enduring human spirit, whose work spans fiction and nonfiction. Her most recent film, “Commuted,” premiered at the 2023 New Orleans Film Festival where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary and Best Louisiana Documentary. “Commuted” told the story of Danielle Metz, a woman whose triple life drug sentence was commuted by President Obama after serving 23 years. The film is available on PBS.

2023 also saw the debut of Nailah’s acclaimed HBO Original documentary, “Donyale Luna: Supermodel” about the first Black supermodel to grace the covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, but whose legacy was lost to history. “Donyale Luna: Supermodel” was an official selection of the American Black Film Festival and Sheffield Film Festival and The Huffington Post recognized it as one of The Best Films of 2023.

Please join us at the Opening Reception for YES MAMA! Portrait Exhibition (), an event we care about deeply. This exhibit is directly rooted in the mission of our Black Maternal Health Community Filmmaker Cohort.

NOVAC will be exhibiting segments from our upcoming Black Maternal Health documentaries! The official premiere of the two films will be later this fall, but we are thrilled to share a sneak peek as part of this beautiful exhibition.

The YES MAMA! Portrait Exhibition is an immersive art experience featuring intimate portraits and interviews of 20 mothers based in New Orleans,LA. This hands-on training is designed to prepare participants for entry-level roles in film and TV production. Participants will learn basic protocol for working behind-the-scenes on set. This includes: Reviewing set lingo, interpreting set paperwork, and practicing daily skills required to proficiently execute production assistant responsibilities.
