1998’s WITHOUT LIMITS, written and directed by the great screenwriter Robert Towne (CHINATOWN) was inexplicably one of two movies released in the late 90s about Olympics track runner Steve Prefontaine.

The other film, called PREFONTAINE was released in early 1997 and Jared Leto played Steve. That film was directed by Steve James who also made the classic documentary HOOP DREAMS.

PREFONTAINE is good but to me, it’s not as stirring or poetic as WITHOUT LIMITS which features terrific performances from Billy Crudup, Donald Sutherland and Monica Potter.
