Nepal's Record Against Indonesia Broken by Bangladesh

Nepal’s 7–0 defeat to Indonesia in the 2022 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers had stood as the biggest defeat suffered by a South Asian side against Indonesia.

That record is now broken, with Bangladesh losing 9–2 to Indonesia in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Indonesia led 6–1 at half-time before adding three more goals after the break, with Mitchell Lee Baker completing a five-goal haul.

Nepal’s 7–0 defeat is no longer the biggest loss by a South Asian team against Indonesia.

With Nepal's FIFA suspension still in place as of October 1, the national team will not be able to take part in the tournament scheduled for November 4–17 in Bangladesh.

Nepal had been drawn in Group A alongside Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan, but the team's place was dependent on FIFA lifting the suspension.

A tournament without Nepal. A generation of players without the chance to represent the country on one of South Asia's biggest football stages.

Nepali football will have to wait.

A night that remains etched in Nepal football history.

Nepal suffered their biggest defeat in international football on this day in 2003, losing 16–0 to South Korea in the AFC Asian Cup qualifying round in Incheon.

South Korea led 5–0 at half-time before adding 11 more goals after the break.

The result also stands as South Korea’s biggest-ever victory in international football.

But what followed made the period even more difficult for Nepali football.
After the Asian Cup qualifying campaign ended, Nepal did not play another international matches in 2004.

Their next recorded A-international came only on 8 December 2005, when Nepal faced India in the 2005 SAFF Championship gap of more than two years between A-internationals.

ON THIS DAY: NEPAL’S BIGGEST WIN

26 September 1999 27 years ago today, Nepal produced a historic 7–0 victory over Bhutan at Dasarath Rangasala Stadium during the South Asian Games.

Hari Khadka opened the scoring with two early goals before Naresh Joshi, Deepak Amatya, Rajan Rayamajhi and a brace from Basanta Thapa completed the emphatic victory.

27 years later, the 7–0 scoreline still stands as Nepal’s biggest win in international football.

And today, as Nepal’s football remains under a FIFA suspension, this historic scoreline offers a reminder of another era of Nepali football.
