The Manassas Gap Railroad is under threat by a special interest trail effort and we must save it! in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley from complete destruction for a trail! Any destruction of infrastructure is utterly unacceptable! is the common sense, compromise solution.
The Norfolk and Western 611 just completed dozens of successful excursions between Goshen and Staunton, Virginia. Tens of thousands of visitors enjoyed the picturesque fall foliage of the Shenandoah Valley behind the Queen of Steam, bringing untold economic impact to the region. Authentic experiences like these are just one reason why we're rebuilding the Shenandoah Rail Corridor. How amazing would it be to see a steam locomotive pull the grade of the historic Manassas Gap Railroad once again?
Excursion and dinner trains bring the 4th quarter of tourism that a stand-alone trail simply cannot achieve. Let's rebuild infrastructure, not destroy it. Save the Shenandoah Rail Corridor, bring back rail service and build the trail in the right-of-way. Rails-With-Trails is the common sense, compromise solution. Why have one when you can have both?
