Why does retirement confuse people?
Because when they ask ‘How do you keep yourself busy?’, they don’t want your schedule. You can say: I run at 7, play tennis, have lunch with family, nap, work on YouTube, mentor students, watch a movie, read a book. They’ll still look puzzled.
What they’re really asking is:
Where’s the IDENTITY?
What’s your PURPOSE?
They dismiss hobbies as ‘pastimes’ and assume only conference calls or sales targets count as meaningful.
But here’s the truth: purpose isn’t tied to corporate productivity. Even 30 minutes of sitting idle — reflecting, staying away from noise — is an act of reclaiming time.
So what’s more productive?
• 30 minutes of silence and reflection,
• or 30 minutes of a sales call chasing targets?
Both are productive — 30 minutes of reflection and 30 minutes of a sales call. They solve different purposes, and both can be meaningful.
So if you’ve retired early, don’t feel guilty. You don’t need to justify your day with a list of activities. Sometimes purpose is found in the quiet stuff, sometimes in the busy stuff. At the end of the day, it’s not about keeping busy — it’s about living the way you want.
