Bagh farmer launches hunger strike over vet negligence
Danish Abbasi, a resident of Chaman Kot, said that his buffalo fell seriously ill in the last week of July.
CHAMAN KOT: A farmer from Chaman Kot in western Bagh, Azad Kashmir, staged a hunger strike after the death of his buffalo, which he claims was caused by negligence at the government veterinary hospital.
Danish Abbasi, a resident of Chaman Kot, said that his buffalo fell seriously ill in the last week of July. The animal was his only source of income. According to Abbasi, he contacted the government-run veterinary hospital, but despite seeking help, the treatment provided was delayed or inadequate, which he believes led to the animal’s death.
Deeply upset by the loss, Abbasi brought the deceased buffalo to the main market of Chaman Kot in protest. However, he said no government official responded to his demonstration. After burying the buffalo, he began a hunger strike on July 27, following a formal notice to the authorities.
On the second day of his hunger strike, the Tehsildar of Dheerkot, Syed Zamir Hussain Shah, visited Abbasi’s protest camp along with his staff. The official promised to take necessary action within 15 days and convinced Abbasi to end his hunger strike.
Speaking to local reporters, Abbasi clarified that he did not begin the hunger strike for personal gain. He said his protest was driven by a deeper concern — the negligence within public service departments and the lack of accountability.
He added that people often accept such incidents as fate, calling them “God’s will,” when in fact many are caused by human negligence. “There are no accidents in God’s system — what we call fate is often the result of carelessness,” Abbasi said.
