Cumbia Punk. What is it, exactly? An oxymoron of sorts, perhaps. Because Cumbia is, in its original sense, a traditional Afro-Latin musical style emerging in Colombia in the 1800s… while Punk is, well, punk; rebelliousness, non-conformity, and often a general f**k-you aimed at anything trad.
This Friday in Easthampton: East LA’s TROPA MAGICA 🌴hit at the Marigold for our next Secret Planet for what will be their Western Mass debut — and it will be both cumbia and punk… as well as a smattering of other genres. The Pacheco brothers are well-known for their rowdy, unpredictable live sets; channeling 90s grunge rock, 60s psychedelic cumbia, East LA backyard parties and quinceañeras into a loud celebration of life. Think Nirvana, Los Destellos; The Doors, Los Mirlos.
We’re chuffed to have ‘em in town, especially with everything that’s been going on in LA lately. Please pull up ready to party. DJ Bongohead spins before and after the madness.
