Economist Jeffrey Sachs has accused the US, UK, and France of deliberately undermining African unity as part of an imperialist "divide and conquer" strategy.

In a Gibbs Business School interview with Professor Hippolyte Fofack, Sachs argued that external powers have historically targeted pro-unity African leaders, and their legacy still fuels divisions today.

He stressed that African integration must be built consciously against both internal fragmentation and outside interference.

The remarks have sparked fresh conversation about neocolonialism and the obstacles facing continental unity efforts.

World’s Youngest Reigning Monarch, King Oyo of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, Dies at 34

The Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda has announced the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who made history as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. He passed away on Thursday at the age of 34.

The kingdom confirmed the king’s death in an official statement, describing it as a profound and major loss to the royal family, the people of Tooro, and the nation of Uganda. The cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

King Oyo’s ascension to the throne was unprecedented in modern history. He became king in 1995 at the tender age of just three years old, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His coronation thrust him into the global spotlight, earning him the title of the world’s youngest ruling monarch—a distinction he held throughout his life.

Despite his youth, King Oyo grew into his role, navigating the complex intersection of traditional leadership and modern governance. The Tooro Kingdom, one of the traditional kingdoms within Uganda, holds significant cultural sway over its people, and the king served as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage. Over the years, he championed education, youth empowerment, and the preservation of local traditions.

In recent years, King Oyo had taken on more public duties and was seen as a stabilizing figure in the region. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the community, with many paying tribute to his calm demeanor and dedication to his people.

The kingdom has not yet announced details regarding the succession or funeral arrangements, but traditional rites are expected to follow in accordance with Tooro customs. Leaders and citizens across Uganda have begun to express their condolences, mourning a monarch who ascended as a toddler and leaves a lasting legacy as a cultural icon.

King Oyo is survived by members of the royal family. Further announcements are expected from the kingdom’s prime minister’s office as the nation enters a period of mourning.
