Happy first day of the academic year! We're continuing to highlight our Berkeley Alumni of AAPI Data, a group of amazing undergraduate and graduate students from spring.

Today, we're featuring Nadia Almasalkhi, who contributed valuable research to support the work of MOSAIC California, a coalition of AAPI organizations across the state. Nadia is passionate about using her research skills to address real-world issues that affect the AAPI community.

Higher education transforms lives—and it's time to share how.

AAPI Data, , and are launching the for Higher Education campaign to preserve access to college and ensure bolder futures for the next generation of AANHPI leaders.

To do this, we need your story.
📢 We’re collecting real stories from AANHPI students to about the transformative impact of higher education — how it’s opened doors, shaped careers, built networks, and strengthened communities.

But we also need to show what’s at stake:
⛔ Potential cuts to Pell Grants.
⛔ Revocation of immigrant student visas.
⛔ Reduced funding for AANAPISIs.

These actions will disproportionately harm AANHPI students and families. Your voice can help make that clear.

Please share your story and stand with us to protect access to higher ed for all.

We encourage you to submit by August 22 for inclusion in our initial campaign push.

Ahead of a special election primary next week in Minnesota, Sieng Lee, national field director for and a Hmong American community organizer, explores how Hmong Americans in Minnesota have cultivated a decade of extraordinary growth in civic engagement.

Next week, XP Lee, a Hmong American candidate for Minnesota state representative and former city councilmember of Brooklyn Park, will be running as the DFL-endorsed candidate to succeed the late Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated in June 2025. Lee’s candidacy is the latest in a strong upward trend of Hmong American civic engagement and public service, and reflects a community’s determination to claim its place in American government and society.

Zohran Mamdani’s groundbreaking primary victory in New York highlights not only his progressive, populist appeal but also the growing political influence of Indian Americans. Indian Americans are now the largest Asian American subgroup in the United States and research shows that they feel more empowered when their elected officials share their racial or ethnic identity.

In her new guest blog post, Sara Sadhwani, senior researcher at AAPI Data and assistant professor of politics at Pomona College, examines the political power of Indian Americans, one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most civically engaged groups.

was a truly inspiring and thought-provoking experience. Thanks to all who attended our panel on storytelling, visualization, and data — we had a great turnout and showcased how our Community Data Explorer tool can be used to capture key local insights on AAPI communities.

Our founder and executive director, Karthick Ramakrishnan, also presented novel survey data and research on a panel about AAPI underrepresentation in broadcast journalism.

Kudos to for putting on such an amazing conference. As always, AAPI Data is proud to be the source of data-driven insights for journalists, advocates, researchers, and more.

Dive deeper into local insights with our upgraded AANHPI Community Data Explorer! Today, we are excited to announce the launch of several new and compelling features in the Community Data Explorer that enable users to access highly localized data about specific communities within the AANHPI umbrella.

The interactive dashboard now features detailed subpopulation breakdowns based on categories such as gender, nativity, poverty level, and more. We’re also introducing new tables on industry and occupation, where users can find specific breakdowns on a subpopulation.

Whether you’re a researcher, advocate, or policymaker, these new features offer sharper insights to support your work.

AAPI Data had a great time at the OCA Convention in Seattle this past week! It was so fulfilling interacting with folks who have used our Community Data Explorer, learned from our surveys, and want to get more involved with advocating for the AAPI community.

Our executive director and founder, Karthick Ramakrishnan, spoke on a plenary about immigrant rights and Constitutional law, and our programs and operations manager, Tracy Fung, led a workshop on narrative, data, and community justice.

Thank you for such an amazing convention—we truly appreciate all the work that went into planning this event and were honored to take part and be in community.
