“We think this would be a step towards mass surveillance and digital control, and that no one should be forced to register with a state-controlled ID system. We oppose the creation of any national ID system. ID cards were scrapped in 2010, in our view for good reason."

Civil liberties groups and MPs on the left and right have been quick to condemn the reported plans, which would see digital ID cards, used on a smartphone app, allowing the verification of a citizen’s right to live and work in the UK.

"Plans for a mandatory digital ID would make us all reliant on a digital pass to go about our daily lives, turning us into a checkpoint society that is wholly unBritish," it said.

"Digital IDs ... would make Britain less free, creating a domestic mass surveillance infrastructure that will likely sprawl from citizenship to benefits, tax, health, possibly even internet data and more."

The government has unveiled more details around plans for a new digital ID card to be held on people’s phones. The digital ID will become mandatory for right to work checks by the end of this parliament.

Civil liberty groups and MPs both on the left and right have urged the government to rethink its plans.
