When the Media Speaks, Society Must Listen
The media is often described as the fourth arm of government not because we make laws or enforce them, but because we serve as the conscience of society. Our duty, as clearly recognized by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, is to inform, educate, and hold duty bearers accountable.
But in a society where the media is weak, corruption becomes the order of the day. The powerful get away with wrongdoing, and the voices of the ordinary citizens are silenced.
In Kusaug, some people especially those in government, past or present see the media as a threat. But I see us as educators, as people who bring light where there is darkness. It is sad when people with higher education behave ignorantly, supporting what is clearly wrong.
Recently, my call for the removal of Nigerian girls involved in commercial s*x activities within Kusaug turned into personal attacks and insults. Some even accused me of "spoiling their business." Shockingly, an educated man even asked me, “Now that the girls are gone, where do you expect us to get women from?” What a confused generation!
We have abandoned our traditions, our values, and the teachings of Islam and Christianity all for temporary pleasures.
Let us remember: being educated is not about how many certificates we have, but how much wisdom and moral sense we apply in daily life.
The media will continue to speak the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable because silence helps only the corrupt.
God bless us all.
