Hardscrabble Press Hardscrabble Press was created in the year 2011 to publish literature for Author Barbara Jean McHugh.

The term “hardscrabble” has been used loosely as a definition of someone who has managed to make something of value by “pulling themselves up by their boot straps”, or in this case to create a venue for publishing writing and photography that does not fit into the usual mainstream format. The logo is of the original log cabin that literally houses the production facility for Hardscrabble Press, an

d was the inspiration for the name of the business. The photo was taken at the turn of the century and over the next 150 years with hard work and Midwestern fortitude this little homestead has flourished. At this time we are not accepting unsolicited manuscripts from other authors.

My new project is writing my Memoir. I am telling separate stories for an audio recording and also creating a brick and mortar book with a photo page to illustrate each story. My children ask questions, I choose a topic and they will have many answers to my life story. This was a fun one.

This is the photo page about the last story my mom told me on her death bed. The story was about the courtship between my mom and dad. A chance meeting over a summer visit by my mom to Viola where my dad lived and a three month whirlwind romance , a flurry of letters and plans for a marriage that ultimately created me and my three siblings.
