The BRICS bloc has officially doubled in size, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates joining the group on the first day of the New Year. The newly expanded BRICS represents almost half the world’s population and about 28% of the global economy.

Brazil, Russia, India, and China formed the leading emerging economies of BRICS in 2006. The historic expansion will emphasize the role of the Global South, with members of the new ten-nation body coming from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran are also the world’s biggest oil producers. This year, the bloc aims to “strengthen multilateralism for equitable global development and security.”

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck central Japan has killed at least 57 people, local authorities confirmed on Tuesday, January 2nd. Over 150 tremors and aftershocks have followed the most powerful earthquake in the country since 2011.

Damage is widespread across cities in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture as the earthquake destroyed buildings, triggered fires, and cut off the local transport system. Japan is trying to establish sea routes to reach isolated areas after the Noto Airport closed due to runway cracks.

About 300 buildings have collapsed or burned down, with some structures may still have people trapped inside. Route blockages and severe road damage are hindering rescue efforts. Japan’s Self-Defense Force had joined police and fire emergency teams in rescuing people.

Russia aimed hypersonic ballistic missiles at two of Ukraine’s largest cities on Tuesday, killing at least five civilians and injuring almost 100, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy said. Kyiv and Kharkiv were both under bombardment by 100 different types of missiles, Zelenskyy said on X, including hypersonic Kinzhal missiles that can fly at 10 times the speed of sound.

At least 70 of those missiles were shot down near the Kyiv area, according to Zelenskyy’s post. Rescue workers searched for survivors at a damaged residential apartment building in Kyiv, where many of the inhabitants have sought shelter in subway tunnels amid the morning’s attack.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed it launched missile and drone strikes, but said they targeted military industrial facilities in and around Ukraine’s capital and depots storing munitions.

Japan ordered nearly 100,000 residents to evacuate after a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan on Monday, January 1. Local authorities confirmed that at least four people died. Rescue efforts continue through the night.

At least 21 quakes above 4.0 magnitude followed the earthquake, triggering tsunamis and fires in the central prefecture of Ishikawa and destroying buildings. Japan, South Korea, The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and Russia issued tsunami warnings.

The amount of destruction and number of injuries remains unclear. The Japan Meteorological Agency has officially named the earthquake the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
