From Girls Gone By Publishers: Sadler’s Wells No 5

When Veronica Weston marries, Jane Foster takes over several of her dancing roles – gaining instant success and admiration. But Jane distrusts her own good fortune. She knows in her heart she will never be like Veronica – one of ‘the great ones’. Then, during a midwinter visit to the Scottish mountains, comes the event which threatens Jane’s future. Suddenly, she is faced with an impossible choice between the two most important things in her life – her dancing and her love for Guy Charlton…

Judi Marsh and Katharine Macdonald have written our introductions.

Jane Leaves the Wells was published on 22 October 2024.

From Harper Collins next month a superlative new deluxe edition of Agatha Christie's most famous and most popular thriller: AND THEN THERE WERE NONE...

The book that topped the international online poll held in Agatha Christie’s 125th birthday year to discover which of her 80 crime books was the world’s favourite.

1939. Europe teeters on the brink of war. Ten strangers are invited to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast. Cut off from the mainland, with their generous hosts Mr and Mrs U.N. Owen mysteriously absent, they are each accused of a terrible crime. When one of the party dies suddenly they realise they may be harbouring a murderer among their number.

The 10 strangers include a reckless pl***oy, a troubled Harley Street doctor, a formidable judge, an uncouth detective, an unscrupulous mercenary, a God-fearing spinster, two restless servants, a highly decorated general and an anxious secretary. One by one they are picked off. Who will survive? And who is the killer? Copies of an ominous nursery rhyme hang in each room, the murders mimicking the awful fates of its ‘Ten Little Soldier Boys’.

This edition, published 3rd December, is published as Agatha Christie always intended, with a sealed envelope inside the back cover, attached to the book so it can't be removed; the envelope contains the confession of the murderer and goes over the clues that exist throughout the book. The publisher claims that this is readers' favourite Agatha Christie title and moreover that it is the biggest-ever selling thriller of all time. I guessed wrongly as to the identity of the killer - now it's your turn!

About Books Monthly

Books Monthly began life in July 1998 as a short story magazine called Fantazone. In August I persuaded one of the UK’s top publishers to send me a book to review, and after that other publishers followed suit and the book reviews sort of took over the magazine. Now in its 22nd year, and with regular books from Harper Collins, Hodder & Stoughton, Macmillan, Pan, Girls Gone By, Dorling Kindersley, Alma Books, Bloomsbury, Octopus, Pen and Sword etc., etc., Books Monthly is probably the longest-running book review magazine on the web...
