Organizing was second nature to Lillian K. Beverly, the first woman elected mayor of North Brentwood, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. With a deep commitment to developing integrity and self-reliance within her community, Beverly and her family made it a mission to uplift those surrounding them, including by providing food and clothing to those in need and by establishing a community fire department.

Beverly followed examples of service set by her grandfather, who founded First Baptist Church in North Brentwood; her mother, who taught at North Brentwood School prior to raising children; and, her father, Sandy Baker, Sr., who also served as mayor of North Brentwood (1937-1943).

Beverly sat on boards of directors for local, state, and national organizations, including the Anacostia Heritage Trails Area, Maryland Association of Black Mayors, Inc., and National Conference of Black Mayors. She noted widespread community involvement to ensure no individual or family would lack necessary resources. Working together, each family contributed – labor, money, time, clothing, and various skills – to help the entire neighborhood thrive.

In the 1990s, Beverly helped organize the North Brentwood Historical Society and co-founded the Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center (PGAAMCC).

Her civic organization became a life source for those in North Brentwood and her influence extended across the D.C. metropolitan area until her passing in June 2024.

Rest in peace Ray DeJon Jr. (Or De Jean)

I called Ray One of the gatekeepers of comedy as he was the connection to lots of the comics and he also was a funny comedian himself. He also started out as a regular personality on Ralph Mcdaniels legendary Video Music Box. Ray will always live in our hearts.

A few years ago I was able to surprise and present this Plaque to him in his honor at his comedy club in Brooklyn. No Rhyme,No Reason, No Special Occasion...Just Because.

I chose to include a pic of his beloved sister & my dear friend Ramona De Jean-Maynard on the plaque & in the wordings as well, since they both were very close.

After I finished reading the plaque on stage Ray accepted it and told everybody that he appreciated getting this special plaque from a ninety year old. Lol

On this day, 14 July 1967, Black anarchist of Puerto Rican descent, Martin Sostre, was arrested at his Afro-Asian Bookstore in Buffalo, New York and charged with “sale of narcotics, riot, arson, and assault.”
Sostre, who previously described himself as a “street dude, a hustler” became politically active during a period of incarceration. Upon his release, he got a job as a steelworker and saved up to open a radical bookshop.
The bookshop became a hub for young Black people, many of whom Sostre gave pamphlets for free, as well as white student leftists. Following days of rioting in Buffalo, police raided the shop, and charged Sostre with rioting, arson and selling he**in.
In court, Sostre was chained, then bound and gagged, so he could not address the court during pre-trial motions. On trial, he represented himself and was eventually convicted by an all-white jury of selling he**in on the witness testimony of a drug addict who told police he purchased $15 of he**in from Sostre. He was sentenced to 30-41 years imprisonment (the witness later admitted he had been told to lie by the police).
While in prison, Sostre became a jailhouse lawyer, helping his fellow prisoners, and educated others, such as Lorenzo Kom'boa Ervin, about libertarian socialism. He also resisted invasive re**al searches, and as a result, was repeatedly beaten and sent to solitary confinement. Years of prison time were also added to his sentence.
A huge international campaign for Sostre's release was launched and was so powerful that he became the best-known political prisoner in the world. Eventually, he was given executive clemency by the governor of New York, and he left prison in February 1976.
After his release from prison, Sostre maintained his activism, organising with his fellow tenants against bad landlords, and setting up community daycare and after-school programs. He lived until the age of 92.
Today, the Martin Sostre Institute continues his legacy.
