Day 14
Judas agrees to betray Jesus
Satan entered into Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the Temple guard with his plan about how he could betray Jesus. They were very pleased, and offered to pay him. Judas agreed a price with them and started looking for a chance to betray Jesus, without anybody suspecting what he was doing.
Jesus prepares to eat the Passover meal
The day of killing the lamb during the Festival of Unleavened Bread had arrived, and Jesus sent Peter and John to get the Passover Meal ready. They asked Him where they were to prepare it. He told them that when they got near the city, they would meet a man carrying ajar of water. He told them to follow him into the house that he would enter, and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, where is the room where My disciples and I will eat the Passover Meal?'. He told them he would bring them to a room upstairs where they would prepare the Passover Meal?’ They went and found everything just as Jesus had said they would.
The Lord’s supper
When the time came for the Passover Meal, Jesus sat at the table with His disciples. He told them how much He wanted to eat this Passover Meal with them before He suffered. He said He would never eat it until it was given its full meaning in the Kingdom of God. Then He took the cup. He gave thanks to God, and said to them “Take this and share it among yourselves”. He said He wouldn’t drink this wine again until the Kingdom of God comes. Jesus was telling them that when people opened themselves to God, accepted Him in their lives and kept His Commands, then God’s Kingdom would be with His people, and He could truly live among them. Then He took some bread, gave thanks to God, He broke it and gave it to them saying, “This is my body, which is given up for you, do this in memory of Me”. In this way he makes his passion death and resurrection present to all generations for ever. In the same way, He gave them the Cup after supper saying, “This Cup is God’s new Covenant, sealed with My Blood which is poured out for you”. Jesus was telling them that His Body was going to suffer and die for us, and that every drop of His Blood would be shed to save us, because God had promised to open the gates of Heaven to all of us, because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. So, once again the Blood of the Lamb would save the people from God’s terrible Justice, only this time the Lamb was the Son of God. Jesus knew that the one who was going to betray Him was sitting among them, and He said, how terrible it would be for the one who would betray Him. They began to ask among themselves which one of them it could be that was going to do such a thing.
The argument about greatness
The disciples were arguing about which of them should be regarded as the greatest. Jesus said to them, “The kings of the pagans have power over their people, and the rulers claim the title of friends of the people”. Jesus told them that this is not the way it should be with them, rather the greatest one must be like the youngest, and the leader must be like the servant. He asked them who was the greatest, the one who sits down and is served or the one who serves. He answered by saying the one who sits is the greatest, yet He is among them as the one who serves. Jesus was telling them that the person who gives his life in the service of God will be regarded as great by God, and will be rewarded in Heaven. Because His disciples stayed with Him through all His trials He would give them the right to rule, just as God had given it to Him. He told them they would eat and drink at His table in the Kingdom, and they would rule over the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus predicts Peter’s denial
Jesus said to Peter “Simon, Simon”, that was Peter’s name before Jesus gave him the name Peter (Jesus gave him the name Peter in Caesarea Philippi when he asked Jesus are you the son of the living God and Jesus answered, You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church.) Jesus told him that Satan had been given permission by God to test them, to separate the good from the bad. He said He had prayed for him that his faith would not fail. He told him that when he turned back to Him, he must strengthen his brothers in the faith. Peter said to Jesus that he was ready to go to prison and die for Him. Jesus told him that before the c**k crowed that night he would have said three times that he didn’t know Him.
Purse, bag and sword
Jesus asked His disciples did they want for anything when He sent them out without purse, bag or sword. “Not a thing”, they answered. But now, Jesus said, anyone who has a purse or a bag must take it, and whoever has no sword must sell his coat and buy one. He said what was written in the Scriptures must come true that, ‘He shared the fate of criminals’. Jesus was telling them that it had been prophesised in the Scriptures that He would be treated like a criminal and sentenced to death, but He showed them what would happen when people went against God. There would be no peace, people would fight against each other, would think only of themselves, and wouldn’t be prepared to help their neighbour.
Jesus prays on the Mount of Olives
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives to pray, and the disciples went with Him. Jesus told them to pray that they would not fall into temptation. He went a little bit away from them, and prayed. “Father”, He said “If You Will, take this cup of suffering away from Me, not My Will, however, but Your Will be done”. Jesus knew the suffering that was in front of Him. An angel from Heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him, and He prayed more fervently. The drops of sweat that fell from Him were like drops of blood. When He was finished praying, He went back to His disciples, and found them sleeping. He asked them why they were sleeping, and told them to get up and pray that they wouldn’t fall into temptation.
The arrest of Jesus
Jesus was still speaking when a crowd arrived, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. He came up to Him to kiss Him. Jesus asked him was it with a kiss that he was going to betray the Son of Man. When the disciples saw what was going on, they asked Jesus would they use their swords. One of them struck one of the High Priest’s servants and cut his ear. Jesus objected to this and He touched the man’s ear and healed him. He asked the chief priests, the Temple guards and the elders who had come to arrest Him, why they had felt it was necessary to bring clubs and swords as if He were a dangerous criminal. He said He was in the Temple every day, and they had lots of opportunities to arrest Him, but He said their time had come because the power of darkness ruled over them, and they had decided against good for evil.
Peter denies Jesus
They arrested Jesus, and brought Him to the house of the High Priest. Peter followed at a distance. There was a fire lit in the courtyard of the house, and Peter joined the people who were sitting around it. One of the servant women saw Peter and said, “This man was with Jesus”, but Peter denied it and said he didn’t even know Him. A little while later a man said to him, “You are one of them”, but again Peter denied it. An hour later another man insisted that Peter was with Jesus, but again Peter denied it, and said he didn’t know what he was talking about. While he was still speaking, the c**k crowed. Jesus turned around and looked straight at Peter, who remembered then what Jesus had said to him, “Before the c**k crows tonight, you will say three times that you don’t know Me”. Peter was ashamed and he cried bitterly.
Jesus is mocked and beaten
The people who were guarding Jesus mocked Him and insulted Him. They blindfolded Him, then struck Him and asked Him to guess who it was who had hit Him. Jesus never fought back; He took it all and offered it to God for the good of all.
Jesus is brought before the Council
In the morning Jesus was brought before the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the Law. They asked Him was He the Messiah. He said if He told them they wouldn’t believe Him, and if He asked them a question they wouldn’t answer Him. He said that from then on the Son of Man would be seated at the right hand of Almighty God. Then they asked Him was He the Son of God? He told them that they had said He was. They said they needed no witnesses, they had heard for themselves what He said. This was the conversation they used to accuse Him.
Jesus is brought before Pilate
The group of people brought Jesus to Pilate where they started to accuse Him. They said they had caught Him telling the people not to pay their taxes to the Emperor, and saying that He was the new Messiah, a King. Pilate asked Him was He King of the Jews. Jesus said “So you say”. Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, that he could find no reason to condemn Him, but they insisted all the more, and said He was starting a riot in Judea with what He was teaching. They said He had begun in Galilee and made His way here.

Day 13
The question about paying taxes
The chief priests and the teachers of the Law wanted to arrest Jesus, because they knew He was talking about them when He told the parable, but they were afraid of the people. They got some clever men to try and trap Him into saying something that they could arrest Him for, so they could give Him over to the Roman Governor. They said to Jesus they knew what He said was right, and that He was not influenced by anyone’s status or position, but that He preached the truth about God’s Will for the people. Then they asked Him was it against the Law of God to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor or not. Jesus knew they were trying to trick Him and He asked them to show Him a silver coin. He asked whose face was on the coin, and they said it was the Emperor’s. Jesus said to them “Pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God”. They saw they couldn’t trick Him, so they fell silent and were annoyed at the brilliance of His answer.
The question about rising from death
There were some who didn't believe that people will rise from the dead. They came to Jesus and said, Teacher, Moses wrote this Law. If a man dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man's brother must marry her so they can have children who will be considered the children of the dead man. They told Jesus about a man who had six brothers. He died and his wife had no children. Each of the brothers married her and all of them died. She was the last to die. They asked Jesus what will happen on the day the dead rise to life, which of the brothers will be married to the woman? Jesus told them that the men and woman who are worthy of Eternal Life will be like angels in the next. They won’t be like the people of this world who marry. They will be God’s children for all eternity. He said that Moses clearly proved that the dead do rise to life. He described God as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, because God is God of the living, and not the dead. In God’s sight everyone is alive, only the body dies, and it will rise after Resurrection on the last day, the soul lives forever and it is the most important part of us. To die is to lose God and that is the only death we should fear. Some of the teachers of the Law spoke up and said “A good answer, Teacher!”. They didn’t dare ask Him any more questions.
The questions about the Messiah
Jesus asked the people “How can it be that the Messiah will be the descendant of David, because David himself said in the book of Psalms, 'the Lord said to my Lord; Sit here on my right until I put your enemies as a footstool under your feet’. David called him, Lord; how then can the Messiah be David's descendant?”. Jesus was trying to make the people realise that He was God, and that He lived always.
Jesus warns against the teachers of the Law
As the people were listening to Jesus, He told His disciples to be on their guard against the teachers of the Law who like to walk around in their long robes, and love to be greeted with respect in the market place. They choose the reserved seats in the Synagogues and all the best places at feasts, they take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers. He says their punishment will be all the worse. Jesus was telling them that people who were always looking for human approval were more interested in themselves than God, and yet they tried to convince others of their love for God by publicly praying; what they were doing, in fact, was robbing people and going against God's Law. Because of their hypocrisy, God says their punishment will be all the greater.
A Widow's Offering
Jesus looked around and He saw rich people dropping their gifts into the Temple treasury. He saw a very poor widow dropping in two little copper coins. He said that this poor widow had given more than all the others because she gave all she had to live on, while the rich gave only what they didn’t need.
Jesus speaks of the destruction of the Temple
Some of the disciples were talking about the Temple, how it looked so beautiful with all its fine stones and in it all the gifts offered to God. Jesus told them that the time would come when not a single stone that they were looking at would be left standing. They would all be thrown down. Jesus was talking about troubles that would come in the future.
Troubles and persecutions
Some people asked Jesus when this would happen, and what sign they would be given to know that it was happening. Jesus warned them to be on their guard when they hear people claiming to speak for Him, telling them that the end is near. He said not to follow them. He says not to be afraid when we hear of wars and revolutions. These things will happen but that doesn’t mean that the end is near. He went on to say that countries will fight against one another. There will be earthquakes, famines and plagues. There will be strange and terrifying things coming from the sky; but He warned them, that before all these things happen, they would be arrested and persecuted. They would be convicted and sent to prison; all because of their loyalty to Jesus and His Word. He said this would be their chance to preach the Good News of God, and they needn’t worry about how they would defend themselves, because He would give them words and wisdom that none of their enemies would be able to contradict. He warned them that their friends, even their brothers and sisters, would hand them over to the authorities. Some of them would even be put to death. He said everyone would hate them because of Him, but not a single hair of their head would be lost. If they stood firm they would save themselves. He was telling them that if they stood firm in their faith and never denied Jesus, they would save their souls and enjoy Eternal Life with God.
Jesus speaks of the destruction of Jerusalem
Jesus told the people that when they see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, they would know that it would soon be destroyed. He said that the people in Judea must run away to the hills, and those who are in the city must leave it. Those who are out in the country must not go into the city, because these will be ‘The Days of Punishment’, and all the things that are written in the Scriptures will come true. He said it would be terrible for women who are pregnant and women with babies. Terrible distress would come, and God’s punishment would fall on the people. Some would be killed and others would be taken prisoner, and the heathen would trample over Jerusalem until their time was up. Jesus was explaining to us what will happen when we turn away from God, and make other things our God. When we turn away from God we choose evil, and evil will bring only death and destruction. God will allow it to happen so we can see that only in God is there peace. By turning back to God, peace can be restored and evil will have no place.
The coming of the Son of Man
Jesus told His disciples there would be strange things happening to the sun, the moon and the stars. On earth, whole countries would be afraid of the roar of the sea and the raging tides. People will faint with fear as they wait for what is coming over the whole world, because the powers in space will be driven from their course. Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. When all these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near. Jesus was telling us that when everything seems lost, He will come and save His people from evil.
The lesson of the fig tree
He went on to tell them this parable. He said to think about the fig tree and all the other trees. When their leaves begin to appear you know that summer is near. In the same way, when these things start happening, you will know that the Kingdom of God is near. He told them that all these things would take place before the people living had all died. He said Heaven and earth would pass away, but His Words never would. Jesus was speaking about His own death, and the strange things that would happen when He died, to prove He was the Son of God. In the cloud of confusion and sorrow, people would turn to God and He would come to His people, and make His Kingdom in them.
No need to watch
Jesus tells us to be on our guard, and not allow ourselves to become occupied with too much feasting and drinking, and with the worries of life, because if we keep our eyes on worldly things only, then we will lose God in our lives. He tells us to pray always that we will have the strength to overcome temptation, and that we will be able to stand before the Son of Man, when our days on this earth are over. Jesus spent His days teaching in the Temple and in the evening, He would go to the Mount of Olives where He would spend the night. In the mornings, the people would gather in the Temple to listen to Him.
The plot against Jesus
The time was near for the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover. This feast was celebrated in memory of the time that the people of Israel were kept as slaves by the Egyptians. God sent Moses to ask the Egyptian leaders to free the Israelites, but they refused to do so. Then God sent different plagues on them, but they still would not let them go. God told Moses that the people were to pick a lamb on the tenth day of the month, and on the fourteenth day, in every house, a lamb was to be killed and some of its blood put on the lintel of the door. On that night, God told him, He would pass over all the houses and He would kill the first born in every house that had not the blood of the lamb on the door. He said they would keep this Day as a feast every year, and for seven days, they would only eat unleavened bread in the evening. The time was coming for this Day to be celebrated again, just as the chief priests and the teachers of the Law were trying to find a way of killing Jesus.

Day 12
Jesus and Zacchaeus
Jesus went on to Jericho and was just passing through. There was a chief tax collector there, called Zacchaeus, who was very rich but also very small. He was trying to see who Jesus was. He ran on and climbed a tree. When Jesus saw him He said “Hurry down, Zacchaeus, because I must stay in your house today”. Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Him. He was delighted that Jesus wanted to stay with him. A lot of the people who saw what was happening complained that Jesus had gone to the home of a sinner. Zacchaeus said to the Lord that he would give half his belongings to the poor, and if he had cheated anyone he would pay him back four times as much. Jesus said to him, “Salvation has come to this house today, for this man is, also, a descendant of Abraham”. He went on to say that the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost. He was referring to the people who had turned away from God and were living sinfully.
The parable of the gold coins
As Jesus was getting near to Jerusalem, the people were thinking that the Kingdom of God would appear, so Jesus told them a parable. There was once a man who was going to another country to be crowned king. Before he left, he gave his ten servants a gold coin each and told them to see how much they could earn with it. The people of his own country hated him and sent messengers after him to tell him they didn’t want him to be king. When the man returned he called together his servants and asked them how much they had earned. The first servant said he had earned ten gold coins from the one he had been given. The master said “Well done, you are a good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will put you in charge of ten cities”. The second servant said he had made five gold coins with the one he got. The master was pleased with him also, and put him in charge of five cities. Another servant came and said that he had hidden the gold coin because he was afraid of him. He said he was a hard man, that he took what was not his and reaped what he didn’t sow. The master was annoyed with him and he said, “You bad servant, I will use your own words to condemn you. You know that I am a hard man, then why didn’t you put my money in the bank where it would gain interest?” Then he told the people who were standing there to take the gold coin away from him, and give it to the servant who had ten coins. They asked him why they should do this, as he already had ten coins. The master said that to whoever had something, more would be given to him. But from those who have nothing even the little they have would be taken away from them. Then he said that those people who didn’t want him to be their king had declared themselves his enemy. He told them to bring them to him, and kill them in front of him.
Jesus was telling us that we are all His servants. He has given all of us faith and He expects us to use it for the good of all. If we live our faith in total humility to God we will increase God’s grace in us, but if we hide our faith and are ashamed of it, we will lose God’s grace and isolate ourselves from Him. We will be judging God by our own standards. When Jesus returns on Judgement Day, and each of us has to account for how we lived our faith, we will be rewarded, or punished, according to what we deserve. As for the people who openly attack Him they will be thrown into Eternal Death.
The triumphant approach to Jerusalem
After Jesus had finished speaking He went on towards Jerusalem. When He came to the Mount of Olives He sent two disciples on ahead, and told them to go into the village where they would find a c**t tied up that had never been ridden. He told them to untie it and bring it to Him; and if anyone asked what they were doing, they were to say that the Master needed it. They went into the village and found everything just as Jesus had said they would. They untied the c**t. Someone asked them what they were doing, and they replied that the Master needed it. When they arrived back to Jesus with the c**t they threw their cloaks on it’s back, and helped Him up. As He rode on, the people threw their cloaks on the ground before Him. As He got near Jerusalem a large crowd of His disciples began to thank God and praise Him in loud voices for all the great things they had seen. They were shouting, “God bless the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in Heaven and Glory to God”. Some Pharisees in the crowd asked Jesus to tell His disciples to be quiet. Jesus answered them and said, “I tell you that if they keep quiet the stones themselves will start shouting”. It was His way of telling them that the whole of creation gives Glory to God, and Jesus is Lord of Creation.
Jesus weeps over Jerusalem
As Jesus came close to the city of Jerusalem He cried, and said to the people, “If you only knew today what is needed for peace, but now you cannot see it”. He said the time would come when their enemies would surround them with barricades, blockade them and close in on them from every side. He said they would completely destroy them, and everyone inside the walls of their city; not a single stone would be left standing in it’s place, all because they failed to recognise the time when God came to save them. Jesus was telling them that because they hadn’t done what He told them, and turned away from their sins and followed the Way of God, evil would reign in them, and they would be lost body and soul.
Jesus goes to the Temple
Jesus went into the Temple and found people within it selling their goods. He ordered them to leave, and said it is written in the Scripture that God said His temple would be a place of prayer, but they had turned it into a hideout for thieves.
Jesus called them thieves because they were using the Temple as a hideout to make money and overcharging especially the poor. Jesus taught the people in the Temple every day. The chief priests, the teachers of the Law and the leaders of the people wanted to kill Him, but they couldn’t find a way to do it, because there were always many people with Him who wanted to hear every word that He said.
The question about Jesus’ authority
One day when Jesus was teaching in the Temple the chief priests and the teachers of the Law along with the elders came to Him and asked Him who had given Him the right to do the things He was doing. Jesus said He had a question for them. He asked them did John’s right to baptise come from God or from man. They started arguing among themselves. They knew if they said it came from God, Jesus would ask them why then did they not believe him. If they said it came from man, the crowd would kill them because they believed John was a prophet. So they said they didn't know. Jesus knew the reason they had given that answer, so He said to them He wouldn’t tell them where His right came from either. He knew well that no matter what answer He gave them, they would find something wrong with it.
The parable of the tenants in the vineyard
Jesus told the people this parable. There was once a man who planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants. When the time came for the grapes to be harvested, he sent his servant to collect his share, but the tenants beat him and sent him back with nothing. He sent another servant but the tenants beat him also, treated him shamefully and sent him back with nothing. He sent a third servant; they wounded him and threw him out. The owner didn’t know what to do, so he decided he would send his son whom he loved very much. He believed the tenants would respect him, but when the tenants saw him, they decided they would kill him. Jesus asked them what would the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants. He told them he would kill those men, and hand the vineyard over to other tenants. When the people heard this they said, surely not.
Jesus asked them what does the Scripture mean that says the stone which the builder rejected as worthless, turned out to be the most important of all. Whoever falls on that stone will be cut to pieces and if that stone falls on someone, it will crush him to dust. Jesus was telling the people about all the prophets who had come before Him and the way they were treated, they were persecuted and hated by the people, so God sent His only Son, and already they were plotting to kill Him. Jesus warned them that God will destroy the people who kill Him and they will lose Heaven. He was telling them that He was the stone the builders rejected as worthless, meaning He was the Person the people would reject and kill, but they would eventually see that He was the most important of all, because he is God’s Son. Jesus said that anyone who falls on that stone will be cut to pieces, and if that stone falls on someone it will crush him into dust. Jesus was telling them that anyone who denies that Jesus is God is preparing his own destruction, and anyone that God’s Justice falls on will be lost forever.

Day 11
Jesus heals ten men
As Jesus made His way to Jerusalem, He went along the border between Samaria and Galilee. He was going into a village when He met ten men who were suffering from a skin disease. They stood at a distance and shouted, “Jesus! Master! take pity on us”. Jesus saw them and told them to go and let the priests examine them. When they had gone a little way, they noticed their disease had gone, and one of them came back shouting praises to God. He threw himself on the ground and thanked Jesus. The man was a Samaritan. Jesus said to him, “There were ten men who were healed, where are the other nine?” He asked why was it only the foreigner who came back to give thanks to God? Jesus told him to get up, his faith had saved him. Jesus was showing us that if we have enough faith, God will reward us, but we should never forget to thank God for all the good things He gives us.
The coming of the Kingdom
Some Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom of God would come. Jesus said the Kingdom of God does not come in a way that will be seen. It is something that is within. He said to His disciples that they would wish they could see one of the days of the Son of God, but they will not. There will be people who will say they see it, over there or over here, but they will not. The same as the lightning lights up the sky, so it will be in the day of the Son of God, but first, He must suffer and be rejected by the people of His time.
Jesus was telling His disciples that God makes His Kingdom in each one of us who live, by obeying His Commandments and by loving one another. Therefore, we would be an example to one another, and we would spread God’s light all over the world. Jesus told them He would suffer much before that. He was telling them about His rejection and crucifixion by the people He had helped and loved. He said it would be the same as it was in the time of Noah, everyone kept doing what they had always done, eating and drinking and getting married, and the flood came and killed them. Noah was saved by being in the boat, because he had done what God asked him to do.
He went on to say, it would be like the time of Lot, everyone kept eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day Lot left S***m, fire and sulphur rained down from Heaven and killed them all. Lot was saved because he did what God asked him, but Lot's wife turned back and she too was lost. He also said that on that day someone who is on the roof of his house must not go into his house to get his belongings, and a person who is out in the field must not go back to his house. Whoever tries to save his own life by rejecting God, will lose Eternal Life, but anyone who loses his life to do God's Will, will gain Eternal Life. He said there will be two people sleeping in a bed, one of them will die and the other will be left alive. Also two women working together, one will die and the other will be left alive. His disciples asked, “Where will this happen”? and Jesus said, “Wherever there is a dead body the vultures will gather”.
Jesus was telling them that anywhere that evil was feeding and growing. God would destroy. He would pick the good from the bad. The bad would be destroyed, and the good would continue to live and give glory to God.
The Parable of the widow and the Judge
Jesus told His disciples a parable to teach them that they should always pray for what they want, and never give up or become discouraged, because God always answers our prayers. He said there was once a judge who neither feared God’s Justice, nor had any respect for anyone. There was a widow who kept pleading to him for her rights, asking him to help her against her enemies. For a long time the judge didn’t listen to her nor do anything for her. Finally he gave in, and he said that even though he didn’t fear God, or have any respect for people, he would help this woman, because she kept bothering him all the time for her rights. So the judge finally got for her all that was rightfully hers, Jesus said that, if the corrupt judge was prepared to do this how much more favourably God would judge His people who called upon Him day and night for help. Jesus said He would judge in their favour, and that He would do it quickly. He asked, “Will the Son of Man find faith on earth when He comes? It takes faith in prayer to obtain what we ask”.
The Parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector
Jesus told this parable to a group of people who believed they never did anything wrong, and who despised everyone else, because they saw them as sinners. Once there were two men who went to the Temple to pray, one was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee kept away from everyone else. He prayed and thanked God that he wasn’t greedy, dishonest or an adulterer like all the rest, and that he wasn’t like the tax collector. He said he fasted twice a week, and gave a tenth of his income to God. The tax collector was standing at a distance, and wouldn't raise his face to Heaven because he was ashamed of his sins. He asked God to have pity on him, because he was a sinner. Jesus told them that the tax collector had made his peace with God but the Pharisee had not. He said God would make great all who humbled themselves and admitted their sinfulness, but all who tried to make themselves out to be great, and who would deny their faults and judge others, would be humbled when they met God's Justice.
Jesus blesses little children
Some people brought their babies to Jesus for Him to bless. The disciples were annoyed with them for doing this, but Jesus said to let little children come to Him, and not to stop them. He said the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the likes of these. He also told them to remember that whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child, will never enter it. Again Jesus was telling us that the Kingdom of God is within us and if our hearts, bodies and souls are not pure like that of a child, and if we don’t have faith and entrust ourselves to our Father in Heaven, then God cannot live in us, and so we cannot expect to enter His home and live with Him in Heaven.
The rich man
A Jewish leader asked Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to receive Eternal Life”. Jesus asked him why he called Him good, since no one is good except God alone. Jesus was telling him that everything that was good came from God even Jesus himself. He asked him did he know the Commandments. He told him not to commit adultery, nor kill anyone, not to steal and not to accuse anyone falsely. He also told him to respect his father and his mother. The man replied and said that since he was a child he had obeyed all the Commandments. Jesus said to him there was yet something more he could do. He said, “Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in Heaven”. When the man heard this he was sad because he was very rich. Jesus saw how sad this made him, and He told him how hard it is for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God. It is harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. When the people heard this they asked Him who could be saved. Jesus told them that what is humanly impossible to do, is possible for God.
Jesus was telling them that rich people don't feel the same need for God as poor people. The rich think they have everything they need, and they attribute their wealth and success in life to their own efforts, and not to the Goodness of God, while poor people depend on God for everything. They are in constant contact with God for all their needs and are happy always to thank God for providing for them. Jesus assured them that to be rich need not mean they couldn’t be saved, because God has the power to save, if we just ask Him. Peter said to Jesus that they had left their homes to follow Him and Jesus said, that anyone who leaves home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of God’s Kingdom will receive much more in the present age, and Eternal Life in the age to come, because they have given their life to God, and God rewards everything.
Jesus speaks a third time about His death
Jesus took the twelve disciples aside and said to them. “Listen, We are going to Jerusalem where everything the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will come true. He will be handed over to the Gentiles, who will mock Him, insult Him and spit on Him. They will whip Him and kill Him but three days later He will rise to life”. The disciples had no idea what He was talking about, as the meaning of it was kept hidden from them. After Jesus died and rose from the dead they knew then what he had been talking about. If they had known before it would have upset them a lot.
Jesus heals a blind beggar
As Jesus was getting near Jericho there was a blind man sitting, begging at the side of the road. When he heard the crowd passing by he asked what was going on. “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by, they told him. He shouted Jesus! Son of David, take pity on me”. The people were annoyed with him and told him to be quiet but he shouted all the louder, “Jesus, Son of David, take pity on me”. Jesus stopped, and told them to bring the blind man to Him. He asked what he wanted Him to do for him. The man replied “Sir, I want to see again”. Jesus said to him, “Then see, your faith has made you well”. At once he was able to see, and he followed Jesus giving thanks to God. All the people praised God, here again Jesus shows us that if we have faith in God He will look after us.
