Today is World Orca Day and we have excellent news to share: Springer and her family were spotted on the central coast of BC recently and she has another calf who looks to be about 1.5 years old. The photo was taken by researchers at Whale Point.

June 14th marks the day that Springer was returned to Johnstone Strait.

Learn more about Springer and her story in ORCA RESCUE!, written by Donna Sandstrom and illustrated by Sig Burwash, the true story of the only successful orca rescue and reunion in history. https://bit.ly/49HfaTq

In Freya and the Snake, Freya watches as her father gets more and more frustrated while trying to catch a snake that’s ventured too close to the family … and then he does the unthinkable. https://bit.ly/44QnbU6

Often books that deal with challenging topics get dismissed as too difficult and therefore not suitable for children. What a delight, then, to see Betsy Bird’s in-depth and thoughtful review of Freya and the Snake on her SLJ blog, A Fuse 8 Production (link in bio). Betsy refers to the book as “an incredible story that highlights a universal child moment of distrust and acceptance unlike anything else on the picture book market.”

Her review reminded us of books such as Death, Duck and the Tulip; The Waiting Dog, and When Dinosaurs Die. These are the kinds of books that make parents flinch, perhaps more so in North America than in Europe as Betsy argues, and Freya and the Snake was originally published in Finland by Förlaget.
