Painting figures... Something I need A LOT more practice on. I've used a lot of different paint colors to this point on these lil bastards and I'm still not satisfied (I've already stripped them of all their paint 2 times and started over). My wet pallet looks like Tammy Faye Baker's face. But these two will be seated in front of the French cafe toasting each with some bourbon over their part in the towns liberation from German occupation, and a waiter will be serving them
The details molded into these figures was minimal and weak, so that was a disappointment, but I'm determined to make them work the scene. Stay tuned

The homemade tree now has a home on the diorama... With the large roots I decided to lift the sidewalks where they would invasively go under and push the walls and crack and crumble a little concrete. I also created some smaller roots that wrap around the larger ones... Then added some grasses and weeds.

Next up... A little creeping ivy on the bricks canal walls.

Remember the scraggly sage brush I said will be a tree last week??

Just about done. Need to trim some strands of fiber here and there with some barber shears, but just about done. (But not without some failures on two attempts this week. 1st attempt I used some materials that made it look like a Dr. Seuss lollipop tree. The second attempt I tried adding a brighter green to the green leaf material you see here to add a bit of highlight to the foilage, and it looked like s**t. I can't express enough that it takes practice and failure in modeling and most hobbies to get results. Never be afraid to try). More to come

The diorama needed something to give it life besides some human figures soon to be added. There was too much concrete, brick and stone. Staring at it for way too long of time, it hit me. Vegetation. Sure there is beautiful handmade wisteria hanging off the cafe building and there is moss and odd clumps of grass among the cobblestones and mildew on the bricks of the canal walls. But that's two subjects of vegetation.. it needs a third on the other end near the cheese shop. I like to add details and elements in odd numbers. ( Not always though! Despite what some narrow-minded artist tried convincing all was a general composition rule. I say f**k them. Build what you desire for you. Only your eye and heart determine one's own definition of any art or craft).

It needed a gnarly tree!! So I took some Sage Brush sent to me by one of our podcast listeners from California, and I am in the process of shaping and forming a deciduous tree of some sort by cutting and attaching pieces to each other to form trunks and branches. Then I will add foliage to them and give the tree color and depth. I'm having a lot of fun with it so far.

Sure I could go out and buy a plastic based tree from a hobby shop or on Amazon and be done with it. But I put so much into this diorama and the models already, to not fully create the realism of the tree and call it all mine. Why cheapen the build?

Stay tuned

For the 1/35 scale World War 2 diorama of Narbonne France along the Canal de Robine I have added a railing along the top of the canal walls in two different styles. A heavier posted one along the jutout section that would be the access point to the river and a smaller posted one along the roadsides. Each railing had to be cut and placed between each post and it was a tedious bitch! But I got it done. I will be weathering them with a little dry rushing tomorrow. On the last photo I took to show the material I worked with to start. I nearly threw this s**t in the trash and gave up...lol

I also aged the brick walls some more with various tones to represent some algae and mildew as it sits along the water. Tomorrow I will add realistic moss and lichen randomly on the bricks and on the top flat stones subtlety where the railing is. At that this point the diorama should be structurally complete and all I need to do is the resin water river, the military patrol vehicle, civilians, and town features... And the fun part of further minúte fine detail painting to wrap this up and get back to the smaller scale structure building I do.

Canal walls so far for the World War 2 Narbonne France, Canal de Robine scene. I added some effervescent White marking and staining with age and elements) to the bricks and a bit of weathering. But not quite there yet. Tonight I'll be adding some algae and a murky waterline to the bottom areas of brick concrete base of the walls.. I will also add some mildew/moss/and some vines to random areas above that line. There will be a brelass railing all along the top of the walls and then I will add the canals water with a resin pour. I never know when to finish these things so... More coming

Street sign with the real towns and directions pointing and actual distances from Narbonne France along the canals bank... It is made of brass I had to bend shape and build, and it was a bitch! I replaced the signage that it came with because the towns on them were on the northern side of France and one was Belgium...lol so I made my own on the computer . I also built painted and placed some old European style fire hydrants and street light poles. Much more to go
