Recently, I've been on the receiving end of people showing up late to meetings. Everyone runs late sometimes, but if you're chronically late, you can be sure this pattern won't go unnoticed but the other person. Even though we live in an age where you can easily communicate a last-minute schedule change, being punctual is a way of fully respecting another person's time.

What have been your recent experiences with people running late or changing plans on you at the last minute for 1-on-1 meetings? Leave your comment below. I'd be curious if you've noticed an increase in chronic tardiness lately.

When sharing your desired target role with others, specificity goes a long way, even (and especially) if you're unsure what you want to do next. Try to convey exactly what you're seeking, which increases the chance of coming to mind if and when a relevant role arises.

I shared these perspectives on personal branding and effective communication when job hunting on this panel hosted by John Jacobs, for the Northern Virginia Economic Development Alliance's "Own Your Story in a New Industry" panel alongside Kathleen A. Duffy and Paula Caligiuri, PhD.
