"The wilds of New Jersey" Debbie Harry - 1975

Deborah Ann Harry grew up in Hawthorne, New Jersey, a borough in Passaic County.

As a child and adolescent in Hawthorne, she sang in her church choir, spent time outdoors (including woods near her home), and later attended Hawthorne High School, graduating in 1963.

After high school, she earned an Associate of Arts degree from Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey (a small liberal arts college) in 1965.

She rose from the underground punk scene of 1970s New York to become an international pop icon, transforming from a downtown club singer into the magnetic, platinum-blonde face of Blondie. Her cool, effortless style and genre-blending sound propelled her from obscurity to global stardom.

Though her musical career was largely tied to New York City and the NYC punk / new wave / club scene, she retained a presence in New Jersey. In more recent years, she has been reported to maintain residences in New York City and in Middletown Township, New Jersey. She was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2017, underscoring her association with the state.

A woman is attacked by the Kamikiri (“Hair-Cutter”) on her way to the toilet. Print by Utagawa Yoshifuji, Japan, 1868.

Below is the translation of the caption that appears on top of the image:

“The Strange Tale of the Kamikiri

As the saying goes, there are no such things as monsters. But there may be odd stories that prove the exception. It was the 20th day of the 4th month, at a noble’s estate in Banchō district (in Tokyo). A maid, who had served the estate for many years, left her bedroom around midnight to use the outhouse.

Suddenly, she was attacked by a pitch-black, unknown being. It hit her on the head, causing her to fall and lose consciousness. The noise alerted others, who came to her aid. Slowly, she regained consciousness. But her hairknot had been cut off, and was found lying 2-3 ken (12-18 feet) away. The pitch-black being was said to resemble a cat, and its fur was like velvet.

This is a true story, taken from a reputable source and presented as such.”
