Gate The gate of all nations, Persepolis, Iran. The Gate of All Nations, also known as the Xerxes Gate, is located in the ruins of the ancient city of Persepolis, Iran. The construction was commissioned by the Achaemenid king Xerxes I (486 -465 BC). The structure consisted of a large room whose roof was supported by four stone columns with bell-shaped bases. Alongside the internal walls of the room, a stone bench ran, interrupted at the doors. The outer walls were decorated with frequent niches. Each of the three walls, east, west and south, had a very large stone door. A pair of massive bulls protected the west entrance, two lamassu in the Assyrian style, although of colossal proportions, were at the eastern door. Engraved above each of the four colossi, there is a trilingual inscription that testifies that Xerxes built and fulfilled the Gate.
