Aaron's Reviews I review movies, share trailers, and hold an annual Movie award blog. On this page I will post movie reviews as I see them.

To keep you up to date on future movies, I will try my hardest to release 3 to 7 movie trailers a week and give my opinion/reaction to them. Once a year there will be a series of posts involving a form of movie awards. Now this award (The Clausen Award) can only be won by certain movies. Some times the Academy Awards snub movies and actors out of a nomination, or the movie just wasn't quite good e

nough to get the Oscar nod. So for the Clausen Awards, if a movie is nominated for an Academy Award, said film can NOT be nominated in the corresponding category. (the only exceptions for this rule is Best Animated Picture and Best Song Performed for a Movie)

Co***ne Bear: Wow did this bear get into some bad marmalade

Director Elizabeth Banks' latest film brings back the cinematic stylings of films like Snakes on a Plane or the Piranha franchise. It's entirely over the top in every sense and frankly I'm a little surprised a company like Troma didn't pick up the idea of a bear on coke first. Essentially it's the kind of movie that fully understands what it is. It's a gruesome slasher comedy that puts a rampaging bear in the place of a serial killer complete with absurd kills and a synth heavy score. The best part... it doesn't try too hard. My worry going into this was that it would wind up being the kind of film that winks at its audience anytime it barrels through genre cliches. Thankfully it doesn't do that and rides the line just enough to be hilarious.
However, it is pretty clear that no one involved had any idea how to end the film and almost everything that happens in the last quarter feels rushed to an absurd degree (including this one flashback that feels so abrupt it almost took me out of the experience as I could only think about how strangely edited that moment was for several moments after). There's a great deal of subplots in the film, but they're all used to sell the jokes... it's when all of them finally collide together that things finally fall apart which sort of fizzles out the fun (luckily not quite enough to sour the whole film).

Overall, if you're looking for a movie about a rampaging bear that does co***ne than this is exactly that movie.

Knock at the Cabin: The cabin that makes you told

M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller is certainly one of his stronger works. In the past, I have had mixed feelings on how Shyamalan writes his dialogue, but here, the dialogue might be one of the strongest aspects in the film; especially because the story just gets right to it. There is no long winded opening or tons of clunky exposition that feels like it drags. Instead, this movie offers up its whole premise and starts it within the first couple minutes. Shyamalan does a great job of keeping the suspense alive and keeping the characters' desperation feel genuine. The only thing that feels a little too messy are the last couple ending scenes... not in a meme "M. Night gotcha twist" sort of way, more that it lacks the same sort of suspense found in the rest of the film offering answers I maybe didn't want because it undermines some themes brought up earlier.

The performances in the film are, for the most part, outstanding. It's great to see Dave Bautista in such a monologue heavy role and absolutely kill it. He can do action, comedy, drama, thrillers, science-fiction... the dude is really becoming one of my favorite actors to watch. The chemistry and back-and-forth between Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge is strong, with the latter being tied for my favorite performance in the film along side Bautista. The others of Bautista's character's group: Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abby Quinn, Rupert Grint aren't really given much focus but all of which have at least one stand out scene.

Overall, M. Night does enough for me to be interested in whatever he decides to do next.

The Integrity of Joseph Chambers: Men will literally go hunting with no experience instead of going to therapy

Robert Machoian's latest film finds an insurance salesman clearly having a mid-life crisis as he feels he must go on a solo hunting adventure in order to find his manhood and gain the admiration of his more experienced peers. While very quiet in its approach, the film is a rich look at toxic masculinity, peer pressure, self-worth, anxiety, guilt, and the fears of providing for a family. Now with this plot and these themes, this low-key drama thriller could have been very generic, but Machoian dips just the tiniest of bits into some surrealist elements as well as throws in a couple quite surprising twists that really help elevate this film to the level it ends up at. After this and The Killing of Two Lovers Machoian has jumped up into one of my most anticipated directors to watch.
Most of any of the brief surrealism actually comes from the sound design, which is already going to be tough to beat for best sound of the year. There are moments of humor added because of the sound, but for the most part it helps create such an unnerving atmosphere especially in combination with the score. Then the film is beautifully shot, there are a couple long takes in particular that are just total treats to look at.
But the Machoian's biggest asset here is the exquisite performance from Clayne Crawford. I fear this dropped too early in the year as Crawford absolutely deserves award recognition for his role here. He's brilliant as this sort of bumbling man who goes into shock following some intense events. The way he's able to portray trauma and guilt is probably some of the best acting that will come out of this year.
Overall, if you're willing to sit down with it, this film is so worth watching.

M3GAN: My, Robot

I suppose it was only a matter of time before we got A.I. Chucky, and honestly... not mad about it, I'd see another one of these. Gerard Johnstone's horror comedy, which feels specifically designed to inspire tiktok reaction videos, is the type of movie that knows fully what it is. It's insanely campy and feels like a proper modernization of the slasher films of the 80's. In fact, I'm a little surprised Tom Holland (the director not the actor) didn't make this himself. It's strange because I'm stuck somewhere between, "wow, this is so dumb" and "wow, I love this for being so dumb."
The slasher/thriller elements are pretty strong. There are some inventive kills and unexpected scares. However, it didn't lean quite far enough in that direction and stays closer to the comedy side of things. Which is interesting because it isn't a comedy due to its jokes as opposed to being a comedy due to the sheer baffling choices made in this film. It's funny in a way that Cats (2019) is funny if that makes sense.

Overall, outside of the acting being pretty rough all around, it makes for a pretty entertaining time.

JUNG_E: Get's a JUNG_C- from me

Yeon Sang-ho's latest honestly might be his best work since Train to Busan. However, this film still doesn't reach anywhere close to that level, but it is entertaining enough to be worth a viewing. The plot is pretty generic, things such as I, Robot and Chappie come to mind. But despite narrative shortcomings, Yeon directs some pretty fun action scenes and the performances are pretty solid.

Overall, not sure I can think of too much to say on this one right now, but it's okay
