There is a side of the Algarve that the tourism boards rarely talk about.
If you step away from the crowded coastal holiday spots and head straight up the banks of the Guadiana River, you land in Alcoutim. It is a striking frontier town where Portuguese whitewashed houses look directly across the water at their Spanish mirrors on the opposing hillside.
It is a place with a remarkably low noise floor, home to unique traditions like the annual Festival do Contrabandista (Smugglers' Festival), a temporary floating bridge that lets you walk between nations, and an elite setup for nomadic camper basecamps.
