The Prairie News The Prairie News, founded in 1919 as The Prairie, is West Texas A&M University’s student-run multimedia news organization.

The Prairie News is designed to reach far beyond training students to be journalists. Staff members are mentored to be responsible citizens and professionals no matter what career path they pursue. The Prairie News takes its mandate to serve the WTAMU and Canyon communities very seriously. In a journalistic sense, students benefit from The Prairie News’ news coverage because the organization conti

nues to address issues that are important to campus. The students who benefit from these journalistic endeavors and public service activities represent the breath of backgrounds and characteristics that are found not only at WTAMU, but also in Canyon, Amarillo, and the numerous smaller communities located throughout the Texas Panhandle.

Dr. Nancy Garcia-Franken: Guiding The Prairie News
Advising TPN for the past seven years has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my career in journalism education. It’s been a privilege to guide students as they grow into stronger journalists, thoughtful leaders, creative collaborators, and powerful storytellers. Semester after semester, I’ve watched them take ownership of their work, navigate real-world challenges, and build a newsroom culture rooted in integrity and mutual support. TPN isn’t just a student publication—it’s a training ground for the next generation of media professionals, many of whom now serve their communities with purpose and passion. It has been a great journey!

A24’s surrealistic technique implements a depth of emotions that would typically be far gone in other films, as the production company takes bizarre approaches to their cinematography. Recently, however, there has been an increase in movies produced with similar distinctive tones and styles that replicate A24’s.

In Amarillo, the Deaf community builds strong connections through shared experiences and local gatherings, overcoming isolation. It is common for a deaf person to feel alone and misunderstood because, in most places, there are so few like them. This is why community is so important.

Alumni Spotlight: The Prairie News
Hi my name is Red and I graduated in December 2024. I worked at The Prairie News as the Video/Audio Editor in the fall of 2024. In my time, I had the opportunity to interview and showcase many amazing professors. All in all, working at TPN was a blast; the staff was great, and I learned so much, not only just about journalism, but as well as the technical aspects of video editing. TPN helped me to improve on my creativity and editing skills and I was able to meet and connect with tons of incredible people.

Graduate Success: Adam Jiwa at WT Enterprise
"After taking an "extended" semester time off, I returned to West Texas A&M University to finish my degree and update my skills in multimedia production. Coming back helped me reconnect with my purpose and sharpen my creative abilities. I graduated in 2021 with a degree in broadcast journalism. I stepped into a career that combines creativity and service through my work in marketing and coaching at the WT Enterprise Center. WT gave me the tools to tell stories that matter, the confidence to lead projects that support entrepreneurs, and the mentorship to pursue my master’s degree in communication. The relationships I have with faculty and staff continue to shape my personal outlook and reminds me that success is often rooted in connecting with others. WT didn’t just prepare me for the workplace, it helped me find purpose in my work."
