There’s a lot to be said about Tha Alkaholiks debut album 21 & Over. To start, West Coast veteran King Tee helped put the crew on the Hip Hop map by featuring them twice on his Tha Triflin’ Album in early 1993. He naturally appears on two tracks of 21 & Over as well, including the opener and second single, “Likwit.”

Another important point: Madlib received early production credit on this album under the Lootpack name—some of the first official beats from the now-revered producer. He also jumps on the mic with his Lootpack partner Wildchild on the track “Turn Tha Party Out.”

But perhaps most importantly, the trio—lyricists James “J-Ro” Robinson and Rico “Tash” Smith, along with emcee/producer/DJ Eric “E-Swift” Brooks—remains largely underrated. This short but tightly crafted debut from Tha Liks is as close to a perfect album as you can get. Unlike much of the gangsta rap dominating the West Coast in the early ’90s, this record focuses on partying—but that doesn’t mean the lyricism takes a back seat. All three members are top-tier verbal acrobats. Meanwhile, E-Swift shines behind the boards, delivering beats that keep the energy high and the party moving. It’s surprising he didn’t receive more recognition for his production skills after this LP.

The trio of B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Muggs changed the game when they dropped their self-titled debut album Cypress Hill in 1991. They pulled off a rare feat: delivering a hardcore, uncompromising sound while achieving massive commercial success (the album went double platinum).

DJ Muggs’ dusty, sample-heavy production paired perfectly with B-Real’s unmistakable nasal flow, creating a signature sound that stood out then and still hits hard today. Tracks like “How I Could Just Kill a Man” and “Hand on the Pump” have become timeless classics, sounding just as raw over three decades later.

Whether it was their unapologetic celebration of ma*****na culture or the aggressive, rebellious energy in their music, Cypress Hill broke boundaries, even crossing over into the punk and rock scenes, where they earned a whole new audience beyond hip-hop.

Revisit the brilliance of this iconic album by diving into the full experience: listen to the music, watch the classic videos, check out every remix, and dig into interviews and live performances from the era. Enjoy the trip.

Happy anniversary to Gravediggaz “6 Feet Deep”!

It was a bit unexpected when former Tommy Boy Records artists Prince Paul (producer for Stetsasonic and De La Soul), RZA (of Wu-Tang Clan), Frukwan (Stetsasonic), and Poetic came together to release an album as Gravediggaz in 1994. At the time, Paul’s career had slowed somewhat, while RZA was riding high on the success of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) with his Staten Island crew. Still, the group teamed up to record the excellent 6 Feet Deep for the UK-based Gee Street Records.

Dark loops and incredibly sinister, disturbing lyrics dominate the album, earning it recognition as one of the pioneering releases in horrorcore hip-hop—if that’s even a genre. Regardless, the result is a classic, standing alongside the first wave of legendary Wu-Tang Clan albums.

Tune in!

Happy anniversary to the classic album “Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1” by The Brand New Heavies!

After finding success in the U.S. with the revamped version of their self-titled debut album The Brand New Heavies on Delicious Vinyl, featuring the powerhouse vocals of N’Dea Davenport, the band returned with a strictly hip-hop affair. With appearances from some of the era’s finest, including The Pharcyde, Gang Starr, Masta Ace, Grand Puba and Main Source, layered over funky production by Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy, the LP quickly became an underground classic.

If you’re a fan of the organic sound of The Roots and haven’t heard this album yet, press play now!
