I was sixteen when I first realized that some children don’t just grow up—they endure entire lifetimes in silence.

There was a girl in my class who carried her books tight to her chest like they could shield her from something. I remember fragments I wasn’t meant to fully understand: a car, nights spent sleeping inside it, a kind of exhaustion that had nothing to do with staying up late.

I never asked her about it. I didn’t have the words, or maybe the courage. I only remember watching how carefully she held herself together in public, as if every small movement was an act of survival. And even years later, I still wondered what she was really living through.

Much later, I came across Etched in Sand by Regina Calcaterra, and I thought of her on every page.

It tells the true story of five siblings—Cherie, Regina, Camille, Norman, and Rosie—growing up on the fringes of Long Island’s Hamptons in New York. Their mother, Cookie, struggled with mental illness, addiction, and violence, sometimes absent for long stretches, other times present in ways that were dangerous. Left on their own, the children learned to survive by relying on one another while living in trailers, shelters, cars, and wherever they could find safety, all while the world around them stayed polished, bright, and willfully unaware.

What lingers most isn’t just what they went through, but where it happened. The unanswered questions. The adults who didn’t ask. The neighbors who looked past them. The systems meant to protect children that repeatedly failed to notice them. A world carrying on as five kids quietly learned survival instead of childhood.

Regina’s writing doesn’t lean on bitterness. She tells it plainly—feeding her siblings when there was nothing, fighting in courtrooms to keep them together, staring at the sky on the hardest nights just to feel something bigger than their reality. There’s grief and anger in her words, but also a clarity that makes the story even harder to shake.

She eventually became a successful attorney and a New York State official, and later co-wrote a sequel with her sister Rosie. Her story has since been used in schools and has influenced discussions around policy for homeless and foster youth. Every year, tens of thousands of young people in the United States age out of foster care without support or a place to land, and her voice now stands for many who once lived through that same uncertainty.

Etched in Sand became a bestseller, but the numbers don’t really stay with you. What stays with you is the fact that it is real. That five children actually lived it. And through everything, they held on to each other when no one else stepped in.

When I finished it, I sat in silence for a long time, thinking again of that girl with the books held like armor. Thinking about how often we pass by children carrying visible weight and choose not to see what’s behind it because seeing would demand something from us.

This book leaves you with a single reminder.

Don’t look away.
