Good morning from the Trail Animals Running Club in Medfield. It’s good to be back in the woods with my camera. Between an extra-busy work schedule, a few injuries, and trying to get the biggest writing project I’ve ever undertaken across the finish line, I haven’t been able to be at as many ultras in person this year. But it’s good to be back!

The weather was unseasonably pleasant, but the summer ultramarathon racing heated up in New England and beyond during the Aug. 8-10 weekend. In Massachusetts, that meant the popular BURCS Sweltering Summer 8-Hour was the place to be in Pittsfield. We’ll have that covered in a separate recap. But here in this week’s roundup we begin in New England where runners ran into – and through – the night at Rhode Island’s Anchor Down Ultra, and also stop in Vermont for the Lover’s Lane time-based races. Then we head West where a teenager from New Hampshire dazzled at the Bigfoot 200, before closing out with the Wy’East Trail Fest.

There was plenty of rugged running on the trails of the Northeast during the Aug. 1-3 weekend, and we have those events – as well as a few more in the eastern United States – covered here in Part II of this week’s roundup. We begin in New England, where James Boeding and Christina Danosi delivered dominant three-day efforts in winning the Ragged 75 Stage Race in New Hampshire, followed by a stop in Maine where Isaac Vaccaro earned a three-peat at the Blue Hill Mountain Trail Fest.

August unfolded with New England ultrarunners scattering from coast to coast to take on a variety of trails, terrain and distances. Multiple ultras took place close to home, and we will have them covered in Part II of this week’s roundup. Here in Part I we head West where New Englanders took part in several ultras along the coast, beginning with the classic Angeles Crest 100-miler.

The July 25-27 weekend was jam-packed with ultramarathon races in the Northeast, and we have them covered here in Part II of this week’s roundup. A handful of New Englanders raced the Squatchy Surprise in New Jersey, and many more took on the Moosalamoo 36-miler and Magnificent Bastards Last Person Standing race in Vermont. But we begin in Rhode Island where the inaugural Ocean State Ultra crowned its first champion.

Late July brought a trio of New England ultras, with two in Vermont and a new 100-mile offering in Rhode Island. We’ll have them all covered in Part II of this week’s roundup, but here in Part I we look to the West where several New Englanders took on tough courses and secured hard-earned finishes. No New Englander shined brighter than Shane Berry, whose ultramarathon debut resulted in a podium finish at the Standhope 60K in Idaho. He leads off this edition of the roundup.

For those who take some time to look around, there are many gems to be found within the Lawrence Woods, including several miles of trails and multiple loop options, and they were on display at the inaugural 12 Hours of Lawrence Woods on Saturday, July 19, at the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

Though it certainly isn’t hidden, it’s fair to say the Lawrence Woods is a “hidden gem” of the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

In 2019, the Notchview Ultra entered new territory as race director Benn Griffin expanded the format into a multi-day distance fest that included a 72-hour race. In doing so, Griffin dared runners to dream of the endurance possibilities and discover what was possible on the 1.9-mile cross country ski loop at Notchview Reservation in Windsor, Mass. Ann Alessandrini was the first to set her sights on 200 miles, and she blasted through the distance barrier in the final hour to close out a 201.4-mile effort. It was the first time a runner would surpass 200 miles at Notchview, but not the last.

Read on for more from the BURCS' .

For the first two years of its existence, the Notchview Ultra was a 6-hour fatass-style event where the top mileage tallies were in the mid-30s. When the event added 12- and 24-hour options for 201…

If it’s mid-July, it’s Vermont 100 time in New England. Hundreds of runners flocked to the Green Mountain State to take on the legendary course, and a Massachusetts resident delivered a legendary effort to bring home the win. Jenny Hoffman has won countless ultras and 100-milers during her career, and she added Vermont to her resume with a stellar performance. But Vermont wasn’t the only place where New Englanders tackled 100 miles last weekend. They took on two tough courses in Colorado – the Ouray 100 and High Lonesome 100 – as well as the Cascade Crest 100 in Washington. We also catch up on the Silverton Alpine 50K in Colorado, but there are a whole lot of 100s in this edition of the roundup.
