If it’s mid-July, it’s Vermont 100 time in New England. Hundreds of runners flocked to the Green Mountain State to take on the legendary course, and a Massachusetts resident delivered a legendary effort to bring home the win. Jenny Hoffman has won countless ultras and 100-milers during her career, and she added Vermont to her resume with a stellar performance. But Vermont wasn’t the only place where New Englanders tackled 100 miles last weekend. They took on two tough courses in Colorado – the Ouray 100 and High Lonesome 100 – as well as the Cascade Crest 100 in Washington. We also catch up on the Silverton Alpine 50K in Colorado, but there are a whole lot of 100s in this edition of the roundup.

Big miles and massive performances were aplenty on the trails of New England during the July 11-13 weekend. A number of runners surpassed the 200-mile mark and various course records fell at the Notchview Ultra in Windsor, Mass., which will be featured in a separate story. Additionally, records were smashed at both the Spaulding Woods 50K in New Hampshire and the Back Cove Backyard Ultra in Maine, both of which are featured in this edition of the roundup. One more regional race also took place last weekend, but results from the 7-11 Slurpee Day Ultra 60K in Connecticut were unavailable at the time of publication.

In Part I of this week's roundup we look West to ultras in Colorado, Idaho and Oregon. We begin in Colorado, where Maine native Katie Schide turned in a stunning performance at the Hardrock 100-Mile Endurance Run. In the course of 13 months, Schide has won three of the sport’s most prestigious ultras and eclipsed two of Courtney Dauwalter’s course records, solidifying her position as one of the sport’s great female ultrarunners. Read on for more in this edition of the roundup.

Mid-July is here, and the heat is turning up on the ultrarunning season in New England. The popular Notchview Ultra was the biggest event in the region during the July 11-13 weekend, with additiona…

The July 4-6 weekend was a celebration of American independence, but we begin this edition of the roundup north of the border at the Quebec Mega-Trail in Canada. A handful of New Englanders took part in the event’s multiple ultra distances, and Vermont’s Eric LiPuma and Britta Clark earned spots on the podium in the 80K to lead the way. Beyond Canada, the ultra slate was relatively quiet across the United States, but New Englanders also raced in New York and Minnesota. We have it all covered in this edition of the roundup.

Patrick McEnaney wasn’t the fastest finisher at the Western States Endurance Run 100-miler on June 28-29, but his feat may have been the most impressive. On a weekend where some of the world’s best ultrarunners took on a 100-mile journey from Olympic Valley to Auburn, Calif., and some of the fastest times in its 49-year history were turned in, McEnaney accomplished a massive milestone that will benefit countless other people.

Read on for more of our recap.

The last weekend of June is Western States weekend in the ultrarunning world, and the sport’s original 100-mile trail race hijacks coverage from nearly every other event as all eyes turn to the hallowed trails of California. Several runners from the region were among the participants at Western States, and we’ll give them their due in a separate recap, but there was plenty of additional ultrarunning action during the June 27-29 weekend – including here in New England. Two ultras took place in Connecticut – the Centurion Ultra Trail and the Brooksvale 12-hour. Additionally, runners from the region took part in multiple other events across the country. Results from Brooksvale were unavailable at the time of publication, but we lead off this edition of the roundup with Centurion where several runners turned in big mileage efforts at the Roosevelt Forest.

Matt Pacheco began his 2025 ultrarunning season with a big victory at Beast Coast Trail Running’s Mt. Toby Trail Race in April. Following a gritty, hard-fought victory at the rain- and mud-soaked Riverlands 100 in May, Pacheco returned for some more Beast Coast fun at the second annual Edge Hill Trail Race on Saturday, June 21, in Ashfield, Mass.

It was Pacheco’s first time racing on the trails of the Edge Hill Conservation Area, a former golf course that is being transformed into a grassland and shrubland habitat. His friend and training partner, Wouter Hoogkamer, won the event’s inaugural 50K in 2024 in 5:09:47, setting a high standard for Pacheco to try to match. He was up for the challenge.

When Katie Claiborne earned her first ultramarathon victory at the Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service’s (BURCS) 2024 Vegan Power 50K, she already was a force to be reckoned with in the Northeast. Since making her ultra debut in 2021, she has had at least 13 ultra finishes to her credit and several podium finishes.

Claiborne opened her 2025 season in February with a trip to Arizona for the highly competitive Black Canyon Ultras 100K. Of the 1,002 starters, 776 finished within the 20-hour time limit. Claiborne was 167th overall and 49th in the female field that saw some of the biggest names in the sport do battle. After taking on a massive field at Black Canyon, Claiborne returned to more intimate racing for her next event: the BURCS Free to Run Trail Races.

The Humane Society for Greater Nashua has been close to Rob Fiero’s heart since childhood. A dog and five cats found their way into his family via the shelter through the years, and Fiero and his wife have volunteered at Humane Society events since 2006. When the organization announced plans to expand its building to enable it to provide more low-cost veterinary care, training, and adoption services to the community, Fiero saw an opportunity to combine two of his passions – animals and trail running – to support the cause.

Read on for more from the inaugural 6-hour and 5-mile runs.

The June 20-22 weekend was the busiest of the year for the New England ultrarunning calendar, with three ultras in Massachusetts, and additional events in Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island. In Part I of this week’s roundup we highlighted results from events in other parts of the country, but here in Part II we turn to the Northeast. The Bay State events will have their own separate recaps, but we cover the additional three – Catamount in Vermont, Last Human Standing in Rhode Island, and 6 at the Springs in Maine – but we begin with the gnarly Manitou’s Revenge 53-miler in nearby New York where two Massachusetts women earned places on the podium while the Bay State’s Daniel Grip raced to another victory on the grueling course.
