We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our listeners and the Edge Radio team, but this isn’t the end. The Lo Sound is continuing on a new platform in the form of a podcast!

Horses have trotted their way into stoner rock, heavy psych, and sludge band names like they just wandered out of a mystical desert jam session.

Whether it’s the sheer power of a galloping warhorse, the hazy vision of a ghostly rider, or just the fact that horses have serious "dude, trust me" energy, these majestic beasts fit right in.

Their wild, free-spirited nature perfectly matches the fuzzed-out riffs and slow, crushing grooves - because let’s be honest, if a horse could drop-tune a guitar, it totally would.

Stu, Andy, and Doug had one mission: to find the greatest stoner rock bands on Earth, the ones truly blessed by the spirit of the lizard. Armed with a van, a questionable map, and an ungodly amount of gas station snacks, they hit the road.

Their first stop was a desert festival where a band called Scaly Prophet played riffs so slow and heavy that Andy swore he saw a bearded dragon nodding in approval. Next, they trekked deep into a swamp to find the greatest lizard ensemble on Earth, whose guitarist claimed his tone came from “communing with ancient reptiles.”

After weeks of travel, questionable camping choices, and one near-mystical encounter with a monitor lizard that definitely understood music theory, they reached the final stop: a hidden, lizard-worshipping band so heavy their amps caused local reptiles to emerge from the sand, bobbing their heads in unison.

As the last note faded into the night,
Doug exhaled. “We’ve found it.”
Stu nodded. “The true lizard groove.”
Andy wiped a tear. “Let’s never leave.”

Lyrically, bands often draw from storm imagery to evoke chaos, transcendence, or cosmic destruction. The deep, hypnotic grooves can feel like rolling thunder, while reverb-drenched guitars mimic howling winds.

Many bands also embrace the mystical and apocalyptic vibes of wild weather, using it as a metaphor for inner turmoil, freedom, or the overwhelming force of the unknown.

Meat and butchery are a goldmine for stoner rock and doom metal inspiration, because nothing says “heavy” like a slab of beef and a dangerously large knife. The slow, smoky process of barbecue mirrors the sludgy, riff-laden crawl of the music, while the raw, bloody imagery of butchery adds a brutal, primal edge.

Cuts of meat evoke weight and substance, while butcher shop tools suggest precision, violence, and a little bit of danger. And let’s be honest, most stoner rock already moves at the pace of a low-and-slow brisket, so why not embrace the theme?
