Your notary bond doesn’t protect you — it protects the public.
If a notary refuses service without legal cause, like discriminating against a signer, that’s a failure of duty under the Illinois Notary Public Act. The injured person can file a claim against your bond.
The bond pays them, and then the company comes after you to recover the money.
That’s why it’s critical to know your responsibilities — and why many notaries also carry Errors & Omissions insurance to protect themselves.
