Hiroshima Marks 80 Years Since Atomic Bombing with Lantern Ceremony
👇
🕊️ Thousands gathered at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on Wednesday, August 6, to mark the 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of the city in 1945 — a moment that changed history forever.
🎐 A solemn Peace Message Lantern Floating Ceremony honored the estimated 140,000 victims of the bombing. At 8:15 a.m. — the exact time the bomb fell — a silent tribute was held, and a new list of names was added to the cenotaph, now bearing 349,246 victims.
💬 Hiroshima Mayor Matsui Kazumi and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba renewed Japan’s call for nuclear disarmament, as the number of living survivors — or hibakusha — continues to dwindle.
