Some insights in to the WALL OF SOUND.....

The WALL OF SOUND is an iconic and much-discussed (almost mythological Sound System.

The Wall of Sound was based on a few simple ideas. Don Pearson and I had lunch with Owsley... who was willing to talk about it on this day.... we got to the restaurant for Lunch and left after dinner was being served.....

The main ideas behind the WOS were:

1. NO MONITORS. Owsley (who felt strongly about EVERYTHING), felt monitors were UN-Natural and ruined both live sound and live recordings. By placing speakers so that each player could hear the others from the "PAs", no monitors would be needed.

2. Each instrument (and all vocals) should have its own PA System.

As I have heard it told (from others around TGOGD and UltraSound, whose time with the Dead postdates the Wall), the Beach Boys were concerned that the monitoring was set up for the Grateful Dead stage plot and would not work for them, and refused to use it (GARCIA btw, really liked the Beach Boys)

One small quirky detail of my afternoon with Owlsey is that Owsley sorta 'invented' the High Protein-Low Card diet, eating mostly very rare meat. He brought a Thermal heat sensor and a stopwatch and insisted on being in the kitchen when they 'seared' his steak, measuring the temp and timing the 'searing'. LUCKILY, Don was able to smooth-talk the restaurant's owner/manager into letting Owsley have his way.....

I will save the details of Owsley's thoughts on the interaction of room resonances and PA's for another post.... but let me just say, he had very strong & unusual ideas about system tuning and digital analysis.... (Like Smaart or SIM or other such systems, which really, really hurt me, but hey, I got to hang with Owsley)

BTW- One of the greatest afternoons I remember!!

Here is the 4th video in our series of Richard Lenz and I (Sam Berkow) talking about the types of diffusers Richard makes (and creates) and how we use them in our projects.

The topic of this video is the use of STAGGERED FLUTTERX.
Just for fun the video includes a video of 'Decibel Dave' building a corner staggered FlutterX in a Control Room.

Here is a first-cut of a conversation I had with Richard Lenz (founder of Realacoustix). We chopped up our day together into a series of short video conversations about various acoustical topics - Absorption, Diffusion, Stage Design, Room Design, LF- Control and others. I hope you enjoy these!
We plan to release 7 or 8 of these .... so collect them all!
Most of the videos were shot on the stage of VIC's Jazz Bar in Las Vegas (thanx to the folks at VICs).

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who sent Birthday Greetings yesterday!

While FB (and all social media sites) have MANY flaws, getting greetings from so many friends, old and new, near and far, is a really wonderful experience.

So once again, THANK YOU all for being a part of my life and lets make this next trip around the sun super fun! - Sam.

2024 marks the completion of the audio & architectural lighting renovation of the Princeton University “chapel”!

Here’s a great recap of the project from Font of House magazine.

All churches share the common goal of spreading the message. Some have a greater emphasis on spoken word; others rely more on music in any variety of styles, from liturgical to flat-out rock ‘n’ roll. Yet, all houses of worship need a sound system that provides clarity, intelligibility and music...

A nice piece from WPS (the project’s integrator). This project took years - as the acoustics & historic nature of the building required many extra steps!

We are extremely happy to report that all systems are up & running & the sound is really amazing / for both Speech & music!!!

WPS recently completed a comprehensive audio system overhaul and infrastructure upgrade for the iconic, 95-year old Princeton University Chapel.

".... and the heat came by and busted me for 'faking the sky' on a cloudy day!"

Two pics of the garden this morning, where it is GRAY and cloudy in NYC.... with just a couple keys strokes, my photo editor, changed the sky from gray to blue. FAKE SKY / SKY REPLACEMENT in 3 secs!

'Strange (and wonderful) world we live in! I'm posting both the original pics and the "Blue Sky versions"
