AHEAD OF JETS SEASON OPENER, JETS OWNER GOES ON FOX NEWS TO INSULT SAN FRANCISCO!
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson made an appearance on Fox News just days before his team opens the season against the 49ers and used part of his airtime to bash the city of San Francisco.
Johnson was a guest on “Jesse Watters Primetime” on Fox News on Friday night after attending a meeting between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and businesspeople in New York City recently. Johnson has been a longtime Republican donor and was appointed by Trump to be his administration’s ambassador to the United Kingdom.
For most of the segment, Johnson touched on political topics focused on Trump. The segment was dreadfully boring, and Watters clearly knew it, deciding to pivot after four minutes to ask Johnson about his football team: “How is Aaron Rodgers doing?”
Johnson laughed and even made one more Trump point before he hyped up his current team: “Aaron Rodgers is terrific, and the team is … I’ve been doing this for 25 years now, and I know I’ve never had a team like this. The team is complete. We’re ready to go. We had a great camp.”
(It should be noted that the main headline throughout the Jets’ training camp has in fact been the absence of top trade acquisition Haason Reddick, who has not been with the team amid a contract dispute and is not expected to suit up Monday.)
Johnson then made an awkward joke about the Jets game being a good reason to visit the city: “We’re going to head out to San Francisco — there’s a good reason to go to San Francisco now.” Of course, despite what most NFL broadcasts have shown over the years, Johnson and the Jets will be at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara for Monday’s game, not San Francisco.
Watters laughed at the joke and quickly chimed in, “Go clean up San Francisco.” Johnson then made it clear he had been watching the show when he added, “You’ve been talking about it on your show, but it’s a good reason to go out there.” Watters then ends the segment by telling Johnson to “clean up and be safe” when he visits for the game.
Fox News has been covering the 49ers quite a bit in the weeks since former San Francisco politician Kamala Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee. Kristin Juszczyk, the wife of 49ers fullback Kyle, bashed Fox News for a misleading headline on a story about Juszczyk declining to make Harris a jacket for last year’s Super Bowl. Watters’ colleague Anita Vogel also implied that Harris deserved some blame for 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall getting shot in San Francisco over Labor Day weekend.
